Hi. I posted an ad on kijiji a couple months ago selling 3 of my cats kittens for $30. This one girl emailed me and really wanted one but asked me to keep her for a couple weeks until she got into her apartment(they were ready march 23rd, she wanted to come april 11th) so I said that was fine as long as she was going to a good home. April 11th and 12th came around and I still hadn't heard from her. Finally on the evening of the 12th I got an email back from her saying sorry but her move in date was pushed to the 26th, so she sent me $25 to say she was coming for sure and she would give me the rest plus some extra when she came. I got an email from her last week saying she might be able to come this weekend, but I didn't hear from her til today. She found a ride to get the kitten. But she only has enough money to either pay me or get the kitten food. I specifically stated in the email that I wanted the kittens to go to good homes, but if she can only afford one of the 2, when each is only $10-$15, I don't feel she will be able to afford to take care of the kitten as I intended and I don't know if I feel comfortable with that. Would it be wrong to refund her money ?

No. I would definitely refund her money and thank her for her time.  Quite separate from the money, she sounds flighty and irresponsible.

Absolutely not.

Sorry but it sounds as she is too unstable to be taking on the lifelong responsibility of a cat.

You might upset her with the news but what matters the most here is a great, stable and loving home, which includes vet care when needed, spaying/neutering, vaccines, etc.

You're not asking much at all for them either, and she can't afford that and buy food? What's wrong with this picture.....

Follow your instincts!

I totally agree I would just give her the money back. If she can't afford the kitten and kitten food how does she expect to afford vet bills ?

Also if she can't be bothered to get in touch as soon as she knew there was a problem with moving that day. Then she can't be that bothered about owning a kitten.

So yeah I would give her the money back -no ifs or buts or sob stories I would just say sorry but no.

Strange but I had replied to you as well but it's not here...:\

Anyway, absolutely agree, your gut instincts are talking to you and shouldn't be ignored, she sounds anxious for pets but lacking the stability and responsibilities that come with life long pet ownership.

Cats need to be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, all that.

Plus she lives in an apt, if she is young will likely move often and where will that leave the cat? Too many times I see this, cute kittens become big adults, the novelty wears off and are left behind.

She seems a higher risk to me and you want what's best for the kittens, not her.

being low-income myself, I agree that this is not a preferred situation. If she can barely afford food, she will not be able to afford the vet. Or if she does, it will be at the cost of her other budget items, such as grocery, spending money or bills. This is not a situation that I would choose to put a kitten into if it had a choice for a better home.

Thank you so much everyone for all of your replies! They were all very helpful in makin me feel confident about my decision:) her money is sent back to her now:) so now hopefully we can find a better, more fitting home for her! Or if we end up keeping her, hopefully her mother will be a little nicer after her visit to the vet :) does anyone have experience with that ? Most of my cats have been adopted from shelters so they were already spayed/neutered. Will she be happier and/or calmer when she gets spayed?

No, I just moved to this town not long ago and I adopted her from a lady who's child was allergic to her. I was in the midst of looking for a good vet to get her spayed around here, I had got in contact with one but she escaped outside and ended up getting pregnant. Now she is all set up to go next week for spaying so hopefully she won't be so keen to get outside after that:)
