We went for our yearly check-up and was found to have high thyroid counts. He has lost 5 pounds in the last year, but we have had him on a strict diet. Over the last few years we have had a bit of health issues with him. He has had symptoms of irritable bowel. We spent the first half of the year we owned him getting him healthy. This new issue came as a bit of a shock. He is on pills to control his levels. I am worried about the side effects seeing that they may effect his eating or make him sick. Has anyone had a cat with both high levels and ibs?

I had an elderly cat who had thyroid problems and was on 10mg Vidalta tabs one a day.  They did not seem to have any adverse effects on him.  He had to be take to vet every three months for check ups.

The main thing is to get him on the right dosage which can take some experimenting with your vet's assistance.  Hyperthyroidism can be very well controlled and the medications used for it work very well.

He is on felimazole 2.5mg ever 12 hours. So far he's been taking the pills pretty good. If I just drop it in his mouth he eats it. Doesn't try to spit it out.

I've actually had cats with this sort of double whammy (both high T4 Levels and IBS) do very well with hills y/d. Actually, it's one of the fastest things I've seen to control their T4 levels. I was skeptical of it until I tested it myself.  It's just the food alone to control the hyperthyroidism. If you don't have a multicat situation, it can work. I've never had a cat refuse it as well (i swear it tastes like bacon bits)...

Thank you so much for this info, but on top of Paws Ibs we also have food allergies. No grain, beef, pork, or turkey among most proteins.

I have posted about my cat Paws here a few times and got wonderful help. I once again need help. He was at the vet a month ago and testing came back his thyroid levels were very high. He was put on Methumazole 2 times a day. It worked great right from the start for about 2 weeks. I came home one nigtht and his face was puffy and he was coverd in a rash. Called the vet and was told waht to give him to take care of this. We stopped the meds for a day to let him
heal (I thought the reaction was to a bug bite) when we started the meds back up he once again had the rash. We went to the vet and they put him on Hills Y/d. I don't like kibble food, there seems to be very little of aanything good in this food. We also have a grain reaction that makes his ears ichy. The vet said to feed him the food anyways. We are leaving for vacation tomorrow and he is staying with family, but when we come back we are thinking about having the radioactive iodine treatment done. Our vet said its the best option, my aunt's vet said the surgery is the better option. Has anyone had these done? This is alot of money for us to pay but I really would like him to have a long term health opportunity not just eating a grain filled kibble.

This is the food he is on.

Thank you for your help.

To updated on Paws: He has been doing ok on hills y/d for a few months. I am very surprised becous of a grain sensitivity.  But over the last month or two he has put on a lot of weight.  He was always a big cat now he just looks fat. It was suggested by my mother inlaw to take him back to the vet. Oh the vet bills!  Be we were going to take him in November for a check up anyway. I was really hoping we were heading in the right direction, but it looks like we might have taken a step back. Ugh.
