I have two weeks to move out of my house - long story but I've been living in an unofficial rental arrangement and my landlady is selling and just told me she want's to paint in two weeks so that's how long I have. I don't have a new place lined up yet so I'll be putting my stuff in storage, boarding my cat Jasper and staying at my mums until I find something. I can't take Jasper to mum's because there are too many people and a dog there already. I've asked one family friend but they aren't willing to look after him.

I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with long term cat boarding and has any tips on what I should look for and ask about in a potential facility. It could be anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Also, if anyone from Melbourne Australia reads this I'd love to hear any recommendations. I've been looking at boarding facilities and they range from $16 to $35 a day. Are there alternatives to boarding at a cattery? The only ads I can find for pet sitters are ones who come to your home but since I won't have a home that's useless. Any advice is welcome.

I don't know much about cat boarding, but as far as other options...

Could Jasper just stay shut in your room at your mother's while you stay there? You don't have to introduce him to any other people or the dog.

If you are afraid of him getting out, you could buy a large dog crate and put him in there with his food, water, litter, toys, bed, etc. while you are away from your room.

Or you can keep him in the crate in quiet area of the house that the dog doesn't have access to.

Thanks Fluffybeard. There's a few reasons why I couldn't confine Jasper to one room. Mum's house is full at the moment. That's another long story but suffice to say I have an 11 year old sister and my mum has just separated from her husband and he'll be sleeping in the lounge. Jasper is only 1 year old and is pretty energetic. I have kept him indoors but I couldn't crate him for what could be a couple of months. He's a very timid cat and I can't see him adjusting to that crazy household. Lol. Also, mum thinks I'm a bit neurotic about Jasper (true) and she doesn't want to deal with my fussiness over that. The list goes on. The only way he could go to Mum's is if he went outdoors.

I've emailed a few pet sitting services today about taking him in for a while. There's not much around Melbourne advertising that service though. I've also emailed a few cat boarding places. I know it's going to cost a fair bit but on the bright side I probably won't have to pay rent in the meantime.
