So mY girl cat , Darla has recently started scooting. It started up about two weeks ago. She is strictly an indoor cat.

About a week ago I started changing her food from science diet to nature's choice dry food. I also started giving her more wet food, from one can a day to two cans a day.

She was eating Paws Premium then I switched her over to Iams. She Ate the iams for about three days and then she wouldn't touch it. On Monday, I came home from work to see throw up on the carpet. I immediately switched her back to paws but last night, she threw up four times in the span of 30 minutes. She has also been scooting since around the time I started giving her two cans a day.

I do not believe she has worms. She is not allowed outside.
I did not bring a sample in for the doctor to check out, the vet did not say anything about bringing one in...

I went to the vet on Wednesday, and got her checked out. The vet looked at her and saw no signs of irritation and he expressed her anal glands. He told me that she could be scooting because of the diarrhea and if she doesn't stop scooting by Monday to call back and get another appointment.

What I am concerned about is that she is vomiting. She still has diarrhea. I am going to drop the wet food from two cans to one a day. I don't understand why she is vomiting. Any insight would be good.....

Is she still vomiting? Has she been able to keep any food down since Monday's first vomiting episode? Did the vet rule out an obstruction?

She vomited on Monday and a few times last night. Yes, she has been able to keep her food down. On Monday though she seemed lethargic but Tuesday morning she seemed fine. After she got sick last night she seemed her normal self.

I told the doc that she threw up but he did not check for any obstruction. She seems to be fine today except for the diarrhea. She hasn't gotten sick today...

Hmm, this is odd. Have you tried a little canned pumpkin (not pie filling) for the diarrhea?

Anal glands, diarrhea, and vomiting is what I call "triple threat" (like that one celebrity who tries to do acting, singing, and dancing...but fails). It's ONE body system that's making all three things appear. The culprit is usually your cats intestine....if it's the lower intestine, you get diarrhea, or anal gland issues. If it's upper, hello vomiting. Cat's often flare up from stem to stern, so you get everything acting up. The good news is that if the source of this is from just making the recent change in food, then you could expect all three things to get better quickly (especially if you switch back to a food that jives with your cats gut). If it's not better quickly, then you know what to do (vet time).

hope that helps,

k

The vet told me about this. I have yet to try it. It is going to be my next thing to try.

Is she back to all the original food, wet and dry that she was on before this started?  I know you went back to the original wet.....  If not I would also return to all her original foods.

I am still giving her a mixture of the dry food. Should I not be doing that?

The safest thing to do is return her to exactly her original food prior to the diarrhea and of it still doesn't return to normal very soon then a special diet, probiotics and possibly medicine will be needed.

Ok good and if you don't see improvement in a couple of days then you need professional help :).  If its a food intolerance then yo may need to re-balance the intestines and that can be some type of combination of antibiotic or probiotic (not at the same time) a mild food like Hills W/D which has fiber to help absorb water, and possibly diagnostic test to rule out other causes.

So both are back on Science Diet and Darla has not gotten sick since the other night. She is still having a bit of diarrhea as of yesterday but it was not as bad as two days ago. I also have not seen her scoot either, but after she went to use the litter box she ran out and crashed into her food bowl and she kinda freaked. She is one of those paranoid cats lol. I followed her and she did not scoot where she normally does so I am hoping that is over.

I really want to get them back on nature's recipie since they are both over weight, about 13 lbs, do I just need to integrate it slower into their food instead of 1/4 cup of nature's recipie and 1/4 science diet? Or should I just keep them on science diet for good and not change it? I am going to weight a bit before I start changing their food, if I do. They are just gaining alot of weight on the light science diet. What should I do!?

Sounds like improvement! The first thing I would do is try to make sure she doesn't develop diarrhea again. That's the firs thing. Then I'd focus on weight.  13 pounds isn't terrible!  For some cats that's normal.  You can try feeding her less.  My current favorite food is hills W/D as it has a lot of non-soluble fiber, lower in calories, very mild, easy to digest and helps with diarrhea.  You could talk to your vet about this, as its a prescription diet.

It does! I am feeling relieved finally. I was getting pretty worried for a bit there.

I have two cats and they like to share bowls... I have tried separating them when I feed them. Doesn't work...

I have tried feeding them less a can of wet food in the morning and a half cup of dry food in their bowls each night and they literally clean the bowl dry within 30 mins and they run each morning and cry at me until I feed them. I have started feeding them 1/2 can of wet food both morning and at night.

When I increased her wet food one can for both of them morning and night, plus I kept the fry food out all night 1/4 of nature's recipie and 1 / 4 science diet her, I noticed that there was still dry food in the bowls when. I would wake up and Darla's coat immediately became softer and her dandruff cleared up. It was pretty bad. She is a darker cat so shows up easier on her than Luke who is a white cat. The doc told me that Darla needed to loose some weight, but Luke and Darla weigh the same amount. Luke just hides it differently than Darla.

So Darla is still scooting... but get this... she scooted after she peed today. First kinda on the tile where the litter box is at and second on the carpet. I already called the vet and have an appointment on Monday.

I did some research and found that she could have a bladder infection... ??... She doesn't have any more diarrhea. I will definitely mention the peeing then scooting thing on Monday.

I think so... I am pretty sure she has.... Is that a good or bad thing?

I haven't seen her have one since the beginning of the week. But i work all day. When i do hear one of them in there i go in and see which cat it is and what they are doing. I have only been home today and so far all i saw her do was pee.

I was just wondering if maybe she swung over to constipation.  After bad diarrhea it does take a while, usually about 3 days.
