Does your keyboard have a Windows key?  It took a while for me to figure out what that was and what it was for.

Yes. I knew what the Windows key was for.

I got a new keyboard and mouse with the tower.....it must be the way they do things. I'm not going to use either of them as I have a keyboard and mouse that still work OK. I put them away in case of emergency. (You never know when I'm going to laugh at something on the forum and snort coffee or something.)

Something that I was doing last night was going through old CDs and such. Heavens, but I have some old stuff scattered about. I guess it's time to get of that stuff, too, as well as the manuals for the old computer. It's like saying good-bye to an old friend in a way. I really liked that computer.

Lauren, how did Larry set up your Windows 7 interface? My BIL had told me before that there was a way to use the 7 interface.

ETA: Lauren, never mind.....I think I figured it out!
:flail: for you expecting me to be able to tell you right off the bat. I would have to have Larry sit here and tell me so I could tell you. AND..... :flail: Because you are such a smart lady that you already figured it out yourself. :high5: :bigthumb:

YAY for being a happy and smart little camper !! Bet Rick is pretty glad too. ;) Your SO good, Pam. :hugs:

Well, I'm here. But I am not amused. This is going to take some getting used to, that's for sure.

I took off everything I needed from my Vista computer. Disconnected it and connected the new one. *shaking my head*

I didn't know where to go! I didn't know what to do!
Finally figured some stuff out, got rid of McAffey (one  free year came with the computer) and installed Kaspersky with no trouble. Then installed Chrome.

And here I am!

It's going to be one heckuva ride, that's all I can say.

When I installed Chrome I had all kinds of problems. It kept on freezing on me. So I went back to Internet Explorer. Hang in there! Lol.

It's been a productive evening. My problem is that I know just enough to be dangerous. And when I run into a problem, I can't just automatically fix it. I have to sit and think about it for a while.

I got Office 2013 installed on my computer. Got Quicken straightened out.

I managed to kill the old hard drive in the old XP computer (had to download and use a drive wiper/eraser/whatever you call it -- ever hear of DBAN?), got the drive out of the computer to take into work tomorrow for my co-worker, and got Vista (it's an old Dell Studio) connected for dear Richard. And got all the important folders put back in. He'll be ready to go when he gets home from bowling tonight.

Had some trouble with that old monitor. I couldn't connect it to the Studio computer the way it did to the old XP computer. I was kind of in a pickle and Muffin and I sat on the floor for a while, trying to figure out what to do. But then I remembered that I had a different connector somewhere in all the computer stuff that I have laying around. The different connector worked.....whew!

The old computer's ports for the mouse and keyboard were not USB ports. The Vista computer pretty much uses USB ports, so I gave Rick the new mouse and keyboard; that took care of those issues. It started right up and seems to be OK. I was able to get some files from the Vista computer transferred over to the new one.

Had some trouble with my Nook. Evidently when I authorized the new computer, I should have de-authorized the Vista computer first. Oops. I didn't think about it until I went to open a book today and said book wouldn't open. So when I got the Vista computer running again, I de-authorized the computer and deleted the ADE software for the ebooks. Came over to the new computer, connected the Nook, but it still wouldn't take the books. I kept playing around with it.....don't know what I did, but it works now again and all the books can open.

Finally got everything cleaned up back here....wires, cords, hard drives, external drives, you name it, it was somewhere back here tonight. But it all looks presentable again.

It's been an interesting night. I don't want to do this again for a while! (But there really wasn't a lot of yelling going on. Maybe some muttering and mumbling. I talked to Muffin quite a bit. But that was it.)

My
? I like it. I like Windows 8.1. It's really not all that bad, once you get used to it. (I'm still not used to it, but it's just not as bad as I thought it would be.)

Still having trouble with my Nook and I don't know why. Windows keeps saying that the Nook is corrupted and needs to be scanned and repaired. Well, it's been fine all this time, so I'm not sure if it's really the Nook. I may just go ahead and de-authorize this computer and re-authorize the Vista computer. I had no trouble on that one. I had to copy a library book to the Nook three times last night to get it to actually show up. And the whole time, Windows kept saying there was a problem with the Nook. But it wasn't showing up on Kaspersky and it should have been.

Some programs were more challenging than others to get loaded/situated.  I had a heck of a time with email, Comcast and the new Outlook just were not going to happen.  Then I googled for a solution and found Windows Live Mail (practically identical to Outlook).  Then loading Quicktime gave me a hard time.  I restarted the computer and somehow it fixed itself.  Then Silverlight.  Other than email, these are programs that I must have per some websites I use for school so of course I was a little panicked.  But somehow, restarting the computer always fixed things (and finding a diff email program).

Otherwise, like you, I like 8.1.  Again I have a touchscreen laptop now so I'm sure I do things a little different here and there but otherwise I really like it.

I didn't want to do the whole account thing with Microsoft, so I went with Windows Live Mail. Then I had to do the account thing anyway when I downloaded Office 2013.

I have a bad tendency to not restart my computer that often.....I'm to the point where I let it go for weeks without restarting now. And I know it's not a good thing. I have to get into the habit of shutting it down about once a week or so. Vista pretty much ran constantly. I just restarted it now; maybe that will help the Nook problem.

Rick is pleased with his "new" computer. While the XP one was good for him and he didn't have any problems with it, he said it's nice to have a a faster computer now.

I generally just leave mine in sleep mode.  Never said I was a role model!

The Microsoft account thing, I signed up and all that jazz but since then have not been bothered by it.  It is nice to have the SkyDrive/OneDrive though.  I've lost stuff before.

That's pretty much what I do, too.

Well,

Evidently, I needed the darn Nook app installed in order to get my Nook working (in what Microsoft must consider) properly.

At work when we got new computers I'd be ill the next day. I'd be terrified. Would go in the next day and be taught and would end up being the one they came to for help.

I love getting new computers at work. One of my co-workers and I got the new computers this last time. There's something about connecting a new computer for the very first time and turning it on. It's pretty cool.

Usually our MIS weenie has to connect the computers for us and then sit down with us and walk us through it. With my co-worker and I, though, til the MIS guy gets to us, we're up and running and we just push our hands at him and say, "Oh, go away!"
