My 15 year old cat Ka - zar passed away recently and I have adopted a 3 month old kitten. I have been told not to feed him any wet food since it could cause an upset tummy. I have read countless sites on kitten nutrition and they all say that some wet is good for them I am asking for some advice from the people on this forum. I've had a cat with Unitary track blockage and I want to prevent this happening to him.

I want to change his food just not sure what to?

Welcome to TCS! :wavey:

I am sorry you lost your friend recently. I hope your new kitten brings you many years of joy, love and companionship.

Feeding an all canned or raw diet is thought to be best for cats. Cats are carnivores and are designed to get their hydration from the prey they catch. Canned food is mostly animal-based protein and moisture, so it is closer to their natural diet.
The protein in dry food is mostly plant-based, so it is not ideal. Dry food contains a lot of starchy carbs, like corn and rice, which are not in a cat's natural diet. This can sometimes cause allergies, weight issues, and urinary tract issues (due to lack of moisture). Here is a link to an excellent site that explains all about proper cat nutrition:
http://www.catinfo.org/

Wet food, in and of itself, should not cause an upset stomach, but changing from one brand of food to another can. It is best to mix the old and new food together for a while and gradually increase the new food as you see the cat tolerating it (no diarrhea or soft poop).

Congratulations on your new kitten!

Thank you thank you happy bird I will go and have a look at the link you left. Banjo has been on a dried food only diet all his life and I want to start him on some wet food. I don't want him getting any blockages. It was the death of one of my cats. Not sure what wet food is best for him but I will start him on supermarket food since I am going to work at one tomorrow and start him on it tomorrow night. I will keep him on some sort of dried food in small amounts.  Again thanks for your help and advice.

The catinfo site also has a comparison chart of wet foods. You are looking for high animal protein, moderate fat, low carb foods. The best of the ones to be found in a grocery store are the Friskies and Fancy Feast pates. As a general rule, anything with gravies and sauces are higher in carbs.
