DH and I are remodeling our kitchen and with the exception of a few minor incidents, everything has gone remarkably smooth.  Well, other than the fact that they started a Popeye's Chicken in our town and built the entire restaurant before our cabinets were even installed.  (We've had our fridge in the living room since early February and no means of cooking except for the charcoal grill.)  I even gave my microwave away.  And it looks like Popeye's will be open for business before we are finished.  They have their sign up already.

We have picked out our granite and I would to get anyone's opinion that doesn't mind sharing.  We've never had granite counter tops before and chose a semi-exotic pattern with a lot of flow to it.  It looks like there rivers running through the granite.  There is one grey splotch in the pattern that resembles sort of an alien head.
I have read online that variations like that in the pattern (i.e. something that doesn't match up with the look of rest of the granite) is consider a flaw.  However, my husband and I like it.

At the granite store, the customers lay out the template on the slab where they want everything to go.  We were thinking of putting the "alien head" on our kitchen island.   Since we don't have that much counter space, we wouldn't have to use it at all, as it won't take nearly the whole slab.  But my friends at work say if we like it, that's what counts.  The cabinet maker says a lot of people have blobs or blotches in their granite and it looks good.  And DH says since it is a part of the granite, how could it not match?  It's the natural formation.  They all make valid points.  What do you think?  We didn't hire a designer and I am definitely not a great one, but I have picked everything myself and am a little surprised at how pretty things have turned out so far.  I just don't want to mess up at this point.

I think if you like it, go for it on the island.  Hey, if you end up not liking it there, you can always just set something over the "splotch", like a bowl of fruit, right

I'm sure it will be gorgeous as is, though, and won't need to be covered.  Can't wait to see pictures

If you want it that way, you do it that way. It's your granite. You're paying for it.

When we chose our granite, we went with slabs called Patagonia. You'll probably remember this when we did our kitchen.....one of the main reasons I love those slabs so much is that each piece has what looks like a ribbon of chocolate throughout the piece and the chocolate ribbon is surrounded by brown sugar and cinnamon (Ok, work with me here!!
If you want an alien head on your kitchen island, then by, golly, you should have your alien head! And you enjoy it!

(I'd love to see pictures. Please.)

Thank you both for your advice.  Pam, that granite is gorgeous.  My tastes have always run a little Gothic and steam punk (years before I'd ever heard the expression "steam punk", I loved that type of thing), so my kitchen is turning out Victorian style without that intention in mind.   DH especially loves the alien head, so we will put it on the kitchen island.  He has stepped back and gone with my choices on everything.  Even with my wavering on the alien head, it would be the right thing to do to make sure he has the one thing he really wants.  I do love the alien head, too.  It's going to change the look of the pattern since it is at the very top of the slab and the rivers or chocolate ribbons (I like the sound of chocolate ribbons) are across the bottom of the slab. We probably won't be able to fit the ribbons on the island, but we can use them on the counter tops.  And hey, we'll have the ancient fossil of one of the "little grays" in our kitchen.

Thank you.  I will definitely try to get some good pictures of it.  But you know me and the camera.  It takes me a long time to get my Secret Santa gifts photographed and I have very little photographic evidence on here that I even have cats.
