My one year old cat, Simon, was diagnosed with a plastic allergy yesterday. I bought a new bowl for him, but the issue is that he chews on everything, his favorites being laundry baskets, phone chargers, and his litter box... I can obviously keep away the laundry baskets and phone chargers. But how can I get him to stop chewing on his litter box? I can't put anything on it that will deter him and my other cat from using it! I also keep his food in a large plastic container. Does that affect anything? Can he be harmed by cross-contamination? His scoop is plastic, as well. I'd appreciate any help. I take him to the vet regularly, so I know he is healthy otherwise.

So sorry to hear about Simon's allergy!

Here are a couple of ideas: Get a stainless steel litter box. Check pet stores or online; I see both Petsmart and Amazon sell them. And purchase a stainless steel scoop. I have one and find it's much better for scraping stuff out of the box than a plastic scoop. Finally, see if you can find a stainless steel or glass container to store his food.

Regarding the chewing, my cat has pretty severe food sensitivities. We've not checked for allergies, as I am managing well by avoiding certain ingredients. But before we figured this out, he was a chewer, chewed everything. Watching him closely over the past couple of months, I noticed he chews when he doesn't feel well. He is not chewing nearly as much now as he used to, and only chews in the morning when I'm preparing his meal- guess I'm not going fast enough. So as you resolve Simon's symptoms, you may find he chews less and less.

Good luck!

Food is better being stored in the original bag anyway, so if I were you, next time you purchase a bag of food, keep it in the original bag.  THEN, it's quite ok to put that bag in a plastic storage bin, but it actually keeps better in the original bag...don't ask me why, but there actually IS a good reason.   I just can't remember what it is

I think it's good that you at least know you're cat has a plastic allergy. You'll also want to get him non-plastic toys.

I bought a Buddeez[emoji]174[/emoji] pet food storage container. They are meant to leave the food in the original bag; you just cut the top off the bag. Here's their website: http://www.buddeez.com/allproduct/pet_prod/pet_bagin/petbagin.html. My cats don't get much dry food anymore, so I ended up using the container for something else.
