I have a friend who had a gorgeous new cat and didn't know what to call it.  She happened to run into a woman psychic who said to her, very cryptically, 'your cat will tell you her name when she is ready'.

My friend thought this was a bit of a hoot and tells me, years later, that she is still waiting for her cat to tell her her real name..

But, just for fun, if your cat could tell you his or her real name, what would it be?

My boy is such a boof and yet he thinks he's so brave and takes himself so seriously. So I think he would insist on something like James Bond (although I think he's more of a Jack Sparrow)

I think my girl would call herself something 'princessy' like Anastasia

I have never had it happen with one of my pet cats, but one of the strays I used to feed told me his name. He had been coming to the patio every day for about a week, so I decided it was time to name him. I was talking to him, trying out names, and all of the sudden the name Seymour pushed into my head. That is the only way I can describe it- it was not my own thought and it felt like the name had been inserted into my thinking from ...somewhere? Pushed is the best word for it. I tried the name out and he responded immediately. He didn't look like a Seymour to me, and I have no particular affection for the name. It was very odd.
Unfortunately, my husband did not care for the name and started calling him Siggy. Seymour gave him the cold shoulder and would not respond. When my husband finally gave in and started using Seymour's correct name, the cat became friendly to him again. It was the weirdest dang thing.
Here he is at the window, announcing his arrival:

What a great (and unexpected) story!

And Seymour's look just melts my heart...

Jack Sparrow would be a great name for a cat.

Seymour is a beautiful cat!

Our kids have always told us their names. Sometimes it took a few days, but sooner or later, we always knew....they made sure of it.

For Morgana, I'm pretty sure it would just be "Her Royal Highness, Queen Morgana of House Habsburg Romanov Tudor Pendragon York Plantagenet Lancaster Stuart Medeci Bourbon"

(Don't question the logic!)

My first cat - Boots - always responded to "come on", which meant there was food. I sometimes think that he thought his name was "come on".

Yes, on that basis, my boy probably thinks his name is "here we go, guys!"  And Nilah, who is always a bit slow off the mark, responds to "quickly!"

She would tell me that her name's Whitey because she's white. Not as snow white though.

My new kitten, Delilah, named herself. We had photos of her from the breeder, before we got her. I was leaving it for my three kids to come up with a name. Then out of the blue one day, it was like someone said the word Delilah into my ear. I just knew I had to name her that. My late father used to sing the Tom Jones song Delilah when I was little, and I used to tell him to sing it a lot because he could sing it just like him. So whether it was a message from dad, I don't know. it definitely suits her, anyway.

I think my 3 would pick the names they have:  Abby (short for Abigail), Spencer and Katie.  They all respond to their names, except Katie. She just responds whenever she hears my voice,  LOL I'm sure she knows her name though!  hehe

I have found it to be true that cats will pick their name.  I rescued a kitten who's momma didn't want him - an orange tabby - and the vet recommended that I take a second kitten to keep him warm because he was skin and bones. So I took the next smallest guy who was white with a gray tabby patch on his back and tail as if he had lounged in mud.  The white one loved to hop after things.  When they were both in better health I started saying names aloud and neither of them would respond.  After a beat I said Rabbit and the white one looked right at me and hopped over. LOL  So his name was Rabbit.  The runt ended up being Tom Cat but I don't think he liked it.

Then there was the other kitten rescued from a recycling baler. We thought she was a he and her paws seemed enormous. So I did the same thing and said some names and she looked right at me when I said Bruiser. When we found out he was a she we changed her name to Bella but she doesn't respond to it as much.  She's only two. Maybe I should change her name back to Bruiser.

I hope I am allowed to post this here, it is a poem by T.S. Eliot, "The Naming of Cats":
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey—

...

T.S. Elliot hit that one on the head. :)

The name "push " is kind of how my felines abtained their names.

I would say my cat definitely "told" me his name. Long story short, he was an abandoned 8-week-old tailless kitten I found in the woods during a hunting trip with some friends. I brought him home, but never having owned a cat before I didn't even think I'd be able to keep him. So I figured I'd just bring him back to health and adopt him out to someone else. But it was soon clear that he had "adopted" me instead, the way he'd become so completely attached to me! So I relented to the fact that he'd be staying, and we quickly became best buddies -- But he did not have a name still, and I struggled to think of one. Nothing seemed to fit him.

Then one morning I was working on these fur pelts (I'm a furrier by trade), sorting, grading and pricing them for an upcoming sale. My black, tailless kitty walked right up to them and laid himself down in the pile! He refused to get off, and when I picked him up and moved him out of the way, he just walked right back into them! And then his name struck me: Skinner!

And here's the photo from the very day he got his name!

HHiSkinner. Those look very soft. No wonder he stayed put.
Is that a badger he is laying on?
