I have a half grown cat.  He easily trained to the liter box.  However, because he was making such a mess dragging the litter out of the box, I changed litters to see if that would help.  He stopped using the litter box.  Now he won't use a litter box regardless of the type of litter.  He uses the shower stall, a carpeted area at the end of the hall, any carpeted area.  He fights me when I try to put him in the box.  I have two different boxes.  He won't use either of them.  I have tried deodorizing the areas he uses.  Nothing works.  Help!  My house stinks.

Yikes!  As an immediate solution; I would go back to the old litter.  Hopefully that will get him using the boxes again.  Be sure you clean the places he has gone with a good enzyme cleaner to get out all of the odors.  If he can smell it (possibly even what you cant!) it may attract him back to that area to go again.

After that; you can try slowly transitioning the litter types by mixing them.  Just go slow.  Some cats are really specific about what they like; but if the alternative is having them mess all over your house I think it's worth the time to go slow.

My mother just went through the transition.  She left one box the original litter and the other was the new.  After a week or so they took to the new litter; but they preferred the old one at first.  So there is another option you might want to try.

Hope that helps!
