New cat's eyes. Reason for concern?

We recently adopted a 6 month old kitten. She's a flame point American shorthair with ice blue eyes. We have noticed that her eyes tend to have a red sheen over them (not from camera flash just everyday life). I can't get a good picture sadly. Is this normal or reason for concern?

hi @RobertsKitty

It's hard to know exactly what you're looking at.  Most cats with eye issues like this would have watery eyes or goopy eyes.  Is it both eyes or just one?  If its one eye, then its definitely a problem, if its both eyes, it may be nothing or it may be something.  Is she rubbing her eyes at all?  Is she itching?

Does she have any other symptoms? Does she have normal energy, appetite, and normal stool, urination?

Has she ever been to the vet because if she hasn't, now is the time to get her a basic exam, have her tested and vaccinated.  If you're concerned at all, I would take her to a vet.

Is there no way to get a picture?

It's not red like inflamed or anything. It's like a really light version of what you'd see in a camera flash but over the whole eye. It's on both eyes since we got her. No goop or weeping or itching. It seems natural I just didn't know if it'd be cause for concern of blindness when she's older etc.

It only happens when you catch her eye a certain way you can see it like a red reflection over the whole eye but you can still see the color of her eye and the pupil under it.

The people who had her before us took her for all her kitten shots.

Should we be concerned about blindness or anything? She sees fine now. She's a great toy hunter. We will keep her forever regardless we are just wanting to know for later.

Hi @RobertsKitty

l have a guy with blue eyes and have never noticed this. l just held his face towards the window and looked through the clear front of his eyes from the side and there is no hint of colour. My old guy Thai who passed a couple of years ago had ice-blue eyes, and l noticed that his irises flickered when viewed a certain way, so l scrutinized his eyes pretty good, and have never seen anything similar to what you describe.

l concur with Stephen and would suggest a vet visit, it'll start up a file on her if nothing else and will give you peace of mind.

I think what you are describing is seen in albinos, that pink look to the eyes. When you do take him in ask if it is normal for a 'nonalbino' to have this. Please post with what you find, I'm curious!

I agree with the above posts and while no vet visit seems immediately necessary it would be good at some point to have a vet visit as part of a wellness plan and to establish a relationship with a vet.

I wondered about this. Her flame point is VERY muted. She's pure white with a very lightly oranged face and a fairly light orange on her ears. Money is exceptionally tight right now but here in about 2-3 months we will be getting her spayed and I will ask the Dr then.

Sorry for the thread resurrection. It took several weeks but I finally got a picture of Calypso's eyes. The pictures below were taken in regular lighting with the camera flash turned off. Sadly it isn't as pronounced in the pictures as real life but it shows it enough for you to still see. Hopefully it helps!

This is interesting, as I have a pair of albino kittens now, and they have the red glow as well.

I am still unsure about their sight, but at least one has developed some sight, delayed too, as I am sure there was no sight what-so-ever prior to about 4 weeks old.

The very pale blue color is indicative of albinos too, as they do often times have some pale blue.

Albinoism derives from the Siamese breed as well.

I will do some digging to see what I find about the slight color of yours.

Thanks so much. I can say she certainly sees fine now, my main concern is for the future. I wasn't sure if she could be counted as albino since she does have flame point markings.
