I was just curious, when you got a new 'companion' for you cat, did a female or a male work out better? Is it better to get a male for a female, or do two females get along better? My two males seem to get along a lot better then my female and them. I've also found that cats seem a lot more accepting of a kitten, but shouldn't you get TWO kittens so they play together and don't drive the older one crazy? Please tell your stories!

I heard male + male have higher chances of being best buds. My Jed did okay with other males at the shelter -- the females hate him. lol.

M&N were litter mates and the reason I recommend 2 kittens at once if you can!  They really did keep each other company and out of as much mischief.

Bunny and Pumpkin live at my mother's.  Bunny was 2-3 when we adopted her (her 3rd home!) and she came home 3 days after Pumpkin; who was a tiny kitten.  He had been a bit of a preemie they said.  He was sick and had flea dirt on him.  Poor baby.  Bunny spent about a week secluded in a spare bedroom and then liked the top of a desk.  (My Mother also had 2 active dogs at the time.)  Once she got more comfortable; Bunny became Pumpkin's surrogate mother.  She bathed him, snuggled him, disciplined him.  It was so sweet!!  They don't necessarily get along the best now; but they are ok.  Pumpkin is 10 now; but when he was younger he used to try to wrestle with Bunny.  She really didn't appreciate it very much.  He got that energy out with Olivia; who is a couple years younger than he is.  I think it's partly Bunny's personality. She is very sweet and loves to be pet.  But she also rules with an iron paw there.  She used to smack the old dog just because she was grumpy!  She accepted both Pumpkin who was tiny and Olivia who was an older kitten without many issues.  Pumpkin and Olivia were fast friends.

My mom has 8 & 9 year old boys. Even though they're getting older they still like to wrestle and play rough. They absolutely love each other.

I have two girls and we're only about a month into having my newest, but I really have high hopes for them, they already snuggle and groom each other.

Depending on how old the existent cat is, getting two kittens may be best. If the older cat still likes to play, getting two may be less necessary.
