Signed on to the cat site to gain insight.   We adopted a male cat two months ago his name is Raylan.  We don't really have any idea how old he is.  Since we got him, he's been awesome.  Using his litter box since the first day.  However, recently - two weeks - he leaves little turds all over the apartment.  They are really tiny, so I don't think it's intentional, and he's still pooping in his box.  He sleeps with us so sometimes we find a turdlett in the bed.  My husband is not happy about this.  What could it be, and what do I do?!

Is Raylan likely to be a young cat, or over a year / older cat?

There are a few things I wonder about before any behavioural issue.  Is he on a dry food diet?  It could be that he is constipated and small hard pellets are coming out sometimes?   Also, does this happen when you are there and observe him or know when it is happening?  And is it a number in close succession or an occasional single pellet maybe once a day?  I lived in an apartment where the young cat suddenly started leaving poop around the apartment pretty much daily, on the stair or on the sitting room carpet, or on a bed he had been sleeping on.  Then we observed him one evening as his behaviour changed and he was having seizures- when he had a seizure he pooped on the floor where ever he was.  If the poop you find is tiny pellets and in random places I wonder if it is more health related than stress or marking of some sort and would suggest you talk to your vet about this.  If he is on a dry diet I would also consider changing to wet food if you can.

Thank you for your response.  We are not sure how old he is.  We were told by the shelter 3 -4, but the vet said possibly 5 - 8.  He eats dry food.  I tired wet, but he refused - I will try again.  it seems like one pellet a day in random places, but I do usually find them in the bed in the morning - they are not there when we go to bed at night.  I've never observed this, and he usually sleeps with us most every night - and he keeps me up with purring, snoring etc :).  I'll try to keep an closer eye.  He spends a lot of time in his window seat, and we've yet to find anything there.  I will try wet, and make an appt with his vet as I'm pretty sure he has asthma :(

When you give him wet, first mix a little with his dry. Slowly increase the amount of wet and decrease the amount of dry of the course of several meals. This will hopefully encourage a smoother transition. The dry food can cause a lot of health issues.

I had a cat that the vet wanted me to feed wet food but he wouldn't eat it, so I ended up soaking his kibble, and he ate that. Might be worth a try :)

I do hope your little fur-guy is OK and will go with some wet food.  My boy is a nightmare when I try to give him wet food - he's on prescription kibble but I'd like him to take small quantities of high protein wet food sometimes so he could get medication that way and to boost the nutrition in his main diet.  I've tried so many things but after one taste he's not interested. Thankfully at this stage his health is better on the prescription kibble but if the balance shifts it will be really challenging.

Do watch carefully (and discretely) as it might give you some clues as to what's going on, and will help inform the vet when you see them aswell.

Thank you all so much for you responses.  He transitioned fairly well over to wet.  I still put a few kibbles mixed in as it's easier for him to eat (his teeth are a bit jacked).  Havent' found any "presents' in quite a while so I think that did the trick.  I appreciate you all taking the time!

Thank you for the update, it is so lovely to hear when something has gone well!

It sounds like the new diet is suiting Raylan well which is fantastic.   Fingers crossed this is him well now and you can all get back to having fun together:  no more unwanted gifts on the carpet.
