My cat Squeekers (female, 8 yrs old) has been vomiting at night shortly after eating (whiskas dry food). Sometimes it is every night for a week, then nothing for days (at least nothing that I find). She has been eating the same food for years and was sick now and again, but recently (past 6-9 months) much more often. Nothing has changed in her life lately, so I'm wondering what it can be. She sometimes has bloody stool, sometimes vomits furballs, rarely but sometimes vomits clear liquid and often vomits uneaten dry food, mostly at night. She has access to dry food 24/7 and gets friskies shredded wet food daily at 5pm. She has been to the vet years ago with no health issues but I no longer have the money to have her properly tested now. I don't want her to suffer, even though she seems fine otherwise, I know this isn't good cat health. She has always been a scared cat (anything makes her jump), very nervous, doesn't play much, sleeps a lot but can also be found purring, rolling around on the floor, running around and having fun. Could all of this be her diet? I'm willing to try anything. I know that Whiskas and Friskies are not the best foods, neither is an unlimited supply, but can this cause these symptoms???? Thank you, thank you.

I should add; she also gets Advantage flea treatment. her last dose was 3 weeks ago, so it doesn't seem to be that.

Yes, she needs to be see by a vet to rule out medical issues, ESPECIALLY since it has been quite some time since her last check up. I know it can be more difficult with a skittish cat; but, it is of utmost importance.

Also, yes, diet can contribute to health problems (IBD, food allergies/intolerances) which can occur over a period of time.

I would love to have her checked by a vet. Financially at the moment, I can only afford cat food, treats and flea treatment until I start back to work next month. I will bring her in a.s.a.p, but until then, should I change her food, amount, time, or will that make things worse? I'm worried, but really can't afford a vet right now unless it's an emergency. Do you really feel this is far beyond a diet issue? I don't expect a diagnosis, just an opinion. I've seen other posts similar stating diet can cause vomiting, but the bloody stool (though not often) I'm not sure about. Thanks for any input.

I should be a little more specific, she vomits after eating during the night (2am-6 am). I assume she is trying to rush eating and get back upstairs to bed (she sleeps in our bed where it's warm) when she gets sick as this very seldom ever happens during the day or evening. I have never tried taking the food away at night. I am considering regulating how much food she has in the dish but worry she will gorge whenever food hits the dish if it is not always full. Also, she does not always have bloody stool, though I have seen it several times. I treated her for worms 2 months ago and haven't seen it since, until once last week, which is around the time she vomited noticeably more often, but always at night. I should have mentioned that the vomiting and bloody stool are not full time issues. The vomiting is frequent, but most always at night.

The bloody stool and vomiting are clear signs that something is not right in her GI system. You can try switching to better food which may help, but there may be damage already that a food change will not help. Bloody stool is a sign of bleeding in the lower GI. It may be caused by constipation. You might want to try feeding all wet to increase the moisture she is getting. Friskies pates (shreds are higher in carbs and contain wheat gluten) are the cheapest of the okay foods. I would also really recommend a vet visit.

Why did you treat her for worms? Does she have access to the outside? What did you use to treat her for worms?

I took in a friends cat for a week while they were away, later found out that their cat had worms. He got worm pills from his vet for my cat at the same time. I wouldn't normally use another cat's medication but I had little choice at the time. I have only noticed bloody stool a couple of times since. She is not an outdoor cat, though she does go out for a few minutes every now and again. I'm hoping diet will help but I will be taking her to the vet as soon as I can. Last night I removed her food dish, no vomiting! I gave her small portions at first this morning, no vomiting. I will get her a small bag of better food and start her on 'pate' rather than shredded. Thank you for the advice and I will post her results.

Clean bill of health from the vet and hasn't been sick (except once) since I changed food. I am still feeding the same brands (whiskas dry and friskies shredded) but no chicken. I guess she is sick of/from chicken because it's been 2 weeks of no chicken except for 1 day, that was the day she got sick. The vet can't explain the bloody stool but did say that if she is allergic to a certain food, prolonged stomach issues could possibly cause it. Either way, I have a happy cat.
