We all know lap cat, that is a cat which purrs on your lap and prevents you to get anything done with the computer thing.

But how many of you have a shoulder cat?

I think that i have one, he is really shy, but he does jump on lap, lately he has started to climb to my shoulder and purrs there leaning to my head and requesting lot of pettins.

I have heard that some cats might do that, but not sure if that is how common, also I'm not sure why it is one that is most shy of them all that is also most cuddle buddy of them all, but that is how it is. There is no hope for me to walk near to him and picking him up, but I can pick him up when I'm sitting, also he usually just jumps to my lap when I sit down, then proceeds to climb onto my shoulder from there.

I did try to take photo, but he grabbed camera's string thinking it was mouse's tail or something like that and yanked from that so that he created more of abstract art than photos.

I've only met one cat who likes to sit on your shoulder, and that's at a shelter I volunteered for.

In NYC, there's this guy that has a cat that likes to sit on his head while they stroll along. there's photos somewhere on google. lol

I have never personally met a shoulder cat, but I have seen pictures/heard stories of them, so they do exist, even if they seem to be somewhat rare. Can you walk around with him on your shoulder?

My Venus was a shoulder cat. She loved to ride on my shoulder from the time she was a kitten until she died. I would go all around the house and she could even maneuver herself for when I would bend over. It helped that she was small and didn't weigh much. Venus dug her back claws into my bra strap for stability. It was funny when she would help herself to the shoulders of my male friends and dig into their backs.

I looked after a gorgeous Siamese who was a shoulder kitty. He would climb up and wrap himself round my neck like a lovely fluffy scarf.

I met someone in Russia years ago who had a great big fluffy orange cat. He would take him around St Petersburg with him on his shoulders and go visiting people. Made my day meeting him! :D

Yes, I can walk a bit, also sit down or get up, but I can't walk from doorway or near it as then he gets scared, despite he likes to chase ball at staircase which is other side of the door, but he is really really afraid to go there when on shoulder and also when I go to stairs while he is there, he runs quickly to his safe spot, if I happen to close the door he start making loud noises and goes to panic, but it is same when I'm carrying him on my hands.

But in his room that is fairly ok to walk with him on my shoulder. Also he sometimes changes to other shoulder walks there behind my head.

If anything, I think he is excited and enjoys from that.

In so many ways he is bit weird, even for a cat. He is one in my profile pic.

He is really huge in size and does weight a lot too, which makes him good massaging cat as he walks and kneads on shoulders, oh yes @PangurBan mine seem to manage just fine if I bend over, oh yes the claws, luckily it is cold season so thick clothing helps with that :D

This one, that spooked expression is one he mostly has if let to outdoors and often at indoors too, he is so much of opposite extremes and can change to one end to another in a snap, but he is also one that likes to sleep in bed and loves pettins too.

I have one as well.  Our older boy Si -- one of his many nicknames is Shoulder Cat.   I have to explain to anyone stepping inside our RV that 'shoulder cat will be waiting for you to stand still' so he can come say hello.  I have to let people know because we expect a 13lb cat to jump to our shoulder but most folks don't.

That might surprise quite many for sure! :D

All of mine vanish when they see or hear other human being, they were so old until first human contact long time after that 8 week window, so they are social only with me.

Really wonderful to hear that there are many others that also have shoulder cats :)

Jamie was a shoulder cat. As a kitten he rode around on my shoulder all the time. Once he reached 5.6 kg. he had to drape himself across both shoulders, which didn't deter him. Mogli occasionally gets up on my shoulder, but he much prefers to be carried in my arms.

Max was my shoulder cat. He didn't sit on any other shoulder except mine. I have a picture of him there.

I hope it's all right to revive this thread. Our Holly is a serious shoulder cat for whom we have to maintain a pprotective wardrobe of over-layers or she would ruin all our shirts! She does not jump up on you, she climbs as if you are a tree. And then once she gets up top she will ride around for hours, purring, kneading paws, hitting you in the nose wih her tail, loving every second. Sometimes she will circle your neck as if needing a change of scenery. When she gets sleepy she will jump down, usually. Once or twice she sleeps where she is until you have to remove her.

Selfies with a cat on you pose challenges; I wish this were in focus:

So fun reading about the other shoulder riders here. Maybe there are more who did not see this thread first time around? Or you have new stories/photos? :)

Mr. Poe is a shoulder cat. He'll run up my back to drape across my shoulders, or perch on the upstairs newel post ready to leap aboard when I come upstairs. His balance is good enough that I can walk around the house, go up and down stairs, and he just stays there. My husband says I have a scattering of little puncture marks on the skin of my back. Lately though, when he's on my shoulder he likes to grab my braided hair (when braided my hair is below shoulder length) in his teeth and yank on it, fairly hard too.

Smokey sounds like a sweetheart.  Thank you for sharing these memories of her, being so loving and cuddly.

I was thinking "aww how cute" reading most of this, then I got to the end.  Ouch!

JTbo, that is a lot of kitty + fur to wear on you!  Great photo of him outdoors there.   Holly is only 7 lbs, and short haired.  She's pretty easy to carry around for a while

7 lbs sounds quite manageable, I'm not sure how much my Mouku weights now, his weights changes quite a bit depending on season, at autumn and early winter his weight is at highest and I think he can be even more than 12 lbs then.

I have attempted to get smallest one to sit on shoulder, but she is not willing to, she usually just jumps down to floor from my shoulder. She weights around 5 or 6 lbs currently.

This is too funny that I found this thread, because I was sitting here looking at the picture threads and laughing at the silly ones, awing at the cute ones, etc.  Fritos jumps up on my lap in full love mode, then proceeded to jump onto the back of my computer chair and head bump the back of my head demanding sweetly for some attention.  I told him not to worry, I still think him and the other kitties in this house are the best, now he's sleeping and purring on my shoulders...lol.

Aww, Fritos said "I'll show you a shoulder cat!"
so cute.

Little miss Holly was not so cute today.  She demonstrated one of the risks of allowing shoulder cat naps. She crawled up for her pettings and snooze on my shoulder, all well and good, and then she woke up suddenly in a sneezing fit.  Which, of course, was aimed directly into my face.  Ew.
