Hi, new to the site and am finding it so helpful.  Can anyone point me in the direction of how to sex newborn kittens.  LolaSky isn't due for a couple of weeks but would like to be as prepared as possible.  Thanking you all.  ps. Live in the U.K. near Liverpool/Manchester.

There are far more experienced people here who will hopefully give you some advise, I was going to tell you to Google it, they might have pictures! I know the males look like this  :  the anus above the urethra opening, basically two 'dots'. The females look more like an upside down exclamation mark, ! anus and then a slit underneath. I just want you to know I wish you well with your kittens!

Di and Bob has it pretty spot on. Males have a much wider space between the anus and urethra so that there is room for the testicles to grow in. And, it does look like a colon ( : ). Females have a much shorter space in between and it does look like an upside down exclamation point or a semi-colon ( ; ). If you are able to determine the gender of one kitten it is relatively easy to sex the others just by comparing them.

The best time to sex the kittens is right after they are born, or else when they get a little older. But, those few weeks after birth everything sort of swells up and it can be very difficult to tell. And, even the best of us make mistakes, so don't be surprised if you look at them again once they start running around and come to a different conclusion (I had one foster kitten that the vet and I were certain was female until they went in to spay her.....)

You can also tell some just based on their coloring. Torties and Calicos are almost always female, while Orange Tabbies are predominately male (though they can be female so this coloring is not quite as reliable). But, if you do end up with a Tortie or a Calico use them as the comparison kitten.

If you want a second opinion you can always take pictures and post them in this thread and we will do our best to help you determine their sex. It's not as easy to do via pictures but we will give it our best shot!

Finally, I'm so glad to hear your girl will be spayed after this litter, but remember that she can go back into heat at any time after the kittens are born. So, until the kittens are old enough to be spayed be sure you take extra precautions to keep her indoors and away from any intact males!

Vibes for a safe and healthy delivery. I hope you continue to browse the articles and other threads and find them helpful, but don't hesitate to ask follow up questions here if you need to. Best of luck and Welcome to TCS!
