5 cc's of SEB for a ten pound cat which would mean 1/2 cc or .5 for a one pound kitten.  Right?

I'll be trying it in the morning.  That sounds about right as far as checking other info as well.

No, definitely not hundreds of dollars!

Earlier this year one of our kittens was treated for roundworms, AND giardia. By the time he got the all clear, we'd spent only $125 in total for both problems.

Standard stool check = $25 each x 4; Drontal for treatment of roundworms = $10 per pill (x 2); Panacur for giardia = $16 (total for one 5 day course). 

I live in an area (Chicago) where vet care seems to be slightly higher than the national average.

It was a small price to pay, for what would have been a much more serious problem if left untreated.  A physical and vaccinations cost me MUCH more than what I paid to get rid of these intestinal bugs.

Edited to add: My cat was 7 months old at the time. The dosages for these meds for a very young kitten would obviously be much smaller, so if these kinds of medications were used your costs would be even lower.

Thanks, Burkey!  I will call tomorrow.  She is now 430 grams, about 15 oz., still playful and curious.  She climbs up the side of the couch or our pant legs; lots of energy.  We live in Ontario, Canada but I'm certainly willing to pay a couple of hundred.  We've already spent that much on our initial trips to the vet.

You're very welcome! In our case, since our cat was already an established patient at the clinic, and was otherwise active and seemingly healthy, our vet didn't request for us to bring him in for an exam in relation to this particular problem...that always helps costs. It sounds like your vet has already seen this kitten very recently, and that she's otherwise behaving as she should... so I imagine the same might hold true for you.  Start with a standard stool testing, and go from there... depending on the results you can make decisions based on your budget. But it's always good to do what you can to find out what you are fighting, before starting the fight.

Since I last posted, our little Bambolina has been doing extremely well.  She started to grow, her diarrhea lessened and she began acting like a curious little kitten.  She rejected her A/D critical care food and went for our other cat's regular food, gobbling it up.  within a week and a half she has gone up from 350 grams to 530 grams, well over a pound (454 grams).  I am still cautious but all looks well.  Will be buying her specialized food as soon as I get to the vet.  Thanks for all your help!

I waited a couple of weeks before I reported back on how my cat is doing after giving him slippery elm with each meal and taking him off of canned pumpkin completely from day 1 of slippery elm.  It did seem to solidify his poop consistently most of the time, yay!  And he seems to be throwing up bile less too – he didn’t throw up for 1-1/2 weeks in a row!  But he just threw up yesterday and this morning, so I don’t know what this means!

I waited a couple of weeks before I reported back on how my cat is doing after giving him slippery elm with each meal and taking him off of canned pumpkin completely from day 1 of slippery elm.  It did seem to solidify his poop consistently most of the time, yay!  And he seems to be throwing up bile less too – he didn’t throw up for 1-1/2 weeks in a row!  But he just threw up yesterday and this morning, so I don’t know what this means!

Glad to hear that the SEB has helped with the diarrhea.


Its hard to say what is going on with vomiting. Did you introduce a new food, or maybe something about the food didn't agree with him?

Well, he's always been a pukey kind of cat, about once a week on average.  So I've experimented with different brands of foods and flavors, and I noticed that he seems to throw up bile more often with certain foods.  Right now he's been eating Stella & Chewy's raw duck and he seems to be throwing up less often.  Sometimes there's some hair, sometimes it's a full-blown hairball, and sometimes there's hardly any hair.  Most of the time the bile is yellowish, but yesterday it was whitish.  He rarely throws up food.

I find that the SEB works most of the time.  Jake will be fine for days on end, and then vomit after a couple meals, than go back to being okay.  Hopefully this is a temporary situation for your boy.

Does your Jake throw up bile or food?  Do you give him SEB mainly for the vomiting problem or for diarrhea?

I have two IBD kitties.  Jake's worst IBD problem is vomiting with occasional diarrhea.  Molly's is the opposite!  Mostly diarrhea with occasional vomiting.

The vomit is usually more liquid or bile than food.  When I got Jake, he vomited almost every day, and Molly's diarrhea was every day, too.  I've changed their diet to pate (no gravy kinds of foods that contain gluten); they get SEB every morning in their breakfast and digestive enzymes in their dinner every night.   Jake especially I try to give three smaller meals a day instead of two, that seems to help control the vomiting, too.  

They're older kitties--14and 11--and were on steroids when I got them, so I've left them on those.  When I tried to taper Jake off the prednisolone, he vomited even with SEB so unfortunately I think they're just on that stuff indefinitely.  It's been a dance to find out what works and what doesn't!

I had no idea BetsyGee. I can't imagine what it must be like to have kitties where diarrhea or vomiting are regular or occasional occurrences in relation to IBD. Kudos to you for managing what sounds like a very delicate balancing act.

Hmm, I guess throwing up is just part of IBD?

Oh no, I just got home and there was soft poop from him.  And then later he threw up bile again, which is the 2nd time today!  Yesterday he threw up bile twice too, meaning that's 4 times in 2 days!!!!  Now I'm worried, this isn't right.  Now I'm thinking of putting him back on pumpkin.  Or maybe I should try the rice water thing.  He sure seems normal otherwise, but I don't like the fact that he's throwing up so much.  Sigh . . . . . and to think that he didn't throw up for 1-1/2 weeks before yesterday, so unpredictable!!!!

   The roller coaster is so hard, I'm sorry to hear this.  Do you have a diagnosis of IBD for--I'm sorry, what's you kitty's name?  I don't really know his back story.  

You can definitely do pumpkin with other things--SEB ad/or probiotics, etc.  I've had some success with pumpkin, too, but they go through phases of whether they like to eat it or not.

Have you discussed the vomitting issues with the vet? The yellow vomit may be nothing, but sometimes it can be serious.

My cat, Sultan, hasn't been officially diagnosed with IBD, I just assumed it based on how prone to diarrhea or soft poop he's been for so many years.  He threw up yet another time tonight, which is the 3rd time today, so it's been 5 times total between yesterday and today!!!!  

I tried to make some rice water by following the instructions exactly by HappyBird but it ended up cooking the rice completely, so there wasn't any rice water left!  Sultan was really hungry for his dinner so I abandoned the rice water attempt and resorted back to canned pumpkin.  I just feel that I have to stop the slippery elm now.

HappyBird, when you said to simmer it for 15 minutes after it boils, did you mean to keep cooking it at a low heat for 15 minutes or did you mean to turn off the heat after it boils and let it just soak for 15 minutes?

Sultan!  Neat name.  I'd sure get him in to the vet.  He might have something else wrong entirely.  Especially with all the sudden vomiting.

I just wanted to share Sadie's story with you all.  I know how frustrating it is dealing with the diarrhea problem.  Sadie had been on Clavamox for an upper respiratory infection, doxycycline also, and developed diarrhea.  I did some research and then talked to my vet.  We both agreed that because of being on the Clavamox, it had more than likely killed the good bacteria and she discontinued the Clavamox.  She than prescribed Proviable-DC for her, which is a probiotic for animals and I suggested a tablespoon of infant rice cereal mixed in with a can of wet cat food.  This was 4 days ago  And although her stools are not completely solid as of yet, at least they're not liquid!  It was recommended keeping her on the Proviable for 20 days and when I see that Sadie's stools are solid I will stop with the infant rice cereal.  What our fur babies put us thru.  Just thought I'd share.  Not sure if this is going to be posted twice or not.  Poppy, the latest addition, just stepped on my keyboard.

I just read through this thread and can so relate as I posted a couple similar threads back in January.  

When I first got Ruby from the shelter (she's about 3 years old we think) she always had diarrhea or soft stools.   I thought it was normal.   She also threw up bile on regular basis (a couple times a week) which I also thought was also normal because it seemed to happen when her stomach was empty and I couldn't feed her when I was at work or overnight.   She was eating 2 small cans of IAMS a day plus some IAMS kibble.

This went on for 2 months until one morning I woke up and she'd been sick a couple times overnight and then instantly threw up her breakfast, which she'd never done before.   As a worried new kitty mom I took her to the vet that very morning.    They kept her all day as I had to go to work and she was fine and ate some of their food.   They didn't know exactly what was wrong with her but suspected IBS and suggested trying the hypo-allergenic wet food before doing expensive tests.

I changed her food cold turkey (which I don't think is generally recommended) and the diarrhea cleared up instantly.   For the first time her pee clumps and poop clumps looked different.
  And the vomiting of bile also stopped. 

This food is definitely more expensive than grocery store food, but it's so nice not to find puddle of bile on my floor when I come home, or worse a semi dry stain on my sofa.
