Last Thursday, someone who knows I help cats called me about a cat with injuries.  He had apparently been abandoned and wandered into a colony she was familiar with.  Turns out, his claws has grown into his pads and were, of course, infected.

After calling around and finding no help, I told her to bring him to me and I would take him to the vet.  In the process of getting him into the carrier, he bit me.  It was my own fault, actually - I'd caught his tail in the door of the carrier.  Poor dear, he was quiet on the way to the vet and just huddled in the carrier when we got there.

Of course, we had to call the health department and animal control because he hadn't had a rabies shot (he hasn't even been neutered).  I had to have a tetanus shot and am on strong antibiotics.  I barely avoided stitches but the doctor said I was OK.

The poor thing is in quarantine for ten days, with the plan to euthanize him after that.  If he were to die before the ten days is up, I would have to have the rabies series (ech).

I could not bear the idea of him in pain all that time, so I authorized the vet to clip his nails, give him an antibiotic and some pain meds.  I have called to be updated every day and he is a) definitely not rabid; b) about eight years old and c) just a tired old man.  I had them do a combo test and fortunately, he is FIV and FELV negative.

After thinking about it and consulting our budget, we made the decision to bring him home and let him live out his live in dignity and as much comfort as we can provide.

The vet said the nails are probably the result of poor nutrition and may not reoccur once he's fed properly.  We'll take that a day at a time.  He will need further surgery as a claw has imbedded in one of his paw pads (the source of the biggest infection, which is clearing up with the antibiotics).

He is in quarantine until next Monday.  Right now, I plan to keep him in my recovery en suite (two crates connected together in my shed) until after the paw surgery and his neuter.

I will put him in the enclosure with Schofield and Alfred after that.  His name is Jonathan but I'm calling him Papa John.  Fingers crossed all goes well between now and Monday but I sure could use some strong TCS vibes, please.

You are just awesome!!  Papa John is so lucky to have found you.

I hope your wound heals quickly too.

I didn't realize Schofield had a friend in his enclosure.  I remembered you moving someone in with him, but thought it didn't work out!!  How is Schofield these days?

Oh, just as grumpy as ever!  Our neighbor abandoned his house cat, who became Alfred.  He's rather dense, a real "Dude!" kind of guy.  Just perfect for the grumpy old man.  I think Schofield will welcome another grumpasaurus.

If not, the enclosure is divided and Papa John can have his own section.  We'll see ...

Love the name grumpasaurus!!!  At least Schofield has a companion and may be ok and welcome a 3rd!!  Fingers crossed that Papa John recovers and fits in well.

You have such a huge heart! You are my heroine.

Lots of
for both you and Papa John to get better soon and for the grumpasauruses (grumpasauri?) to get along.

Oh you do have a heart of gold.  Lucky kitty to have landed in your hands.  Hoping you both heal quickly and that the Grumpy Old Men get along.

Bless you for being there for Papa John. I'm going to quit griping about the sudden influx of half grown kittens into our colony. The new kids seem to be in good health. They can scatter faster than bee bees on a dance floor. Time to dust off the traps and get them into neutral. They are a bunch of cuties, for sure!

Update on Papa John - or Jonathan.  The vet tech assigned to take care of him during quarantine fell in love with him and decided to take him home!  He's a fat, happy house cat now - on ten acres of land with horses and goats.

Obviously, he came out of quarantine with no rabies, thank goodness.  He also had surgery on his paws (several people contributed to that) and all's well with them.  It is believed that the claw problem was the result of malnutrition, so hopefully, that won't be a problem in the future.

The poor thing is in quarantine for ten days, with the plan to euthanize him after that.

I was confused by this, because it sounded like he was going to be euthanized no matter what, even if he didn't show signs of rabies. I was upset after reading that, and pleasantly relieved and surprised that he is still alive and has a home. Rabies in cats is so rare, that I think it's awful that animal control is so quick to want to euthanize a feral after it bites someone. Even if they don't euthanize the cat, some areas require that the cat be quarantined for 6 months, which would be torture for a feral. I'm glad Papa John didn't meet with either of those fates!

One of my indoor cats has a thumb nail that grows curved towards the pad. The one time it grew into the pad, I had to pull the nail away from the pad and trim it with manicure scissors, a nail file, and clippers. He cried the whole time, but it was over in 5 minutes, and since then I've been careful to regularly clipping his claws. I can't imagine how much pain Papa John was in. I'm so happy he's going to have a happy life now :)

Yes, originally, they thought his claws were too far gone. But as the quarantine went on and they clipped them, tended to his pads and assessed him, they realized he was savable, as long as he didn't have rabies. So in a way, the quarantine turned out to save him! Happy, happy outcome.
