Hello everyone

You all have given me a lot of information and made me feel better before and I need your assistance again.
I have previously written about my 17yr old cat Domi having Pancreatitis and bad breathe. Well it had gotten worse and I can't take him to the vet until tomorrow. I feel horrible but I am currently unemployed and have no money so can't take him to an emergency get now. He is practically eating nothing, drinking okay and his back legs can't hold him up. He is very wobbly and falls over some times. I am not sure if this is due to pain in his pancreas or kidneys or other organs or if he had a stroke or if his arthritis is really bad. How can I keep him comfortable until he sees the vet tomorrow? Any suggestions about what this could be? I have been a total wreck since 1 today because I can't stand it if he is in any pain.

Please someone help me or say something to make me feel better, I have to stop crying soon. [emoji]128575[/emoji]

Hi Adrianna,

I'm so sorry your kitty is not well. I can totally relate to the financial issues and not being able to do all you want to for your kitty. That's especially difficult when it comes to medical issues. That he is still drinking okay is a good sign. If he's also still able to use the litter box, he should be okay to wait until a morning trip to the vet.

As for making him comfortable, were it my kitty, I would just stay with him. Pet him and talk to him periodically. Help him around to his water dish and litter box. If you're already doing these things, then I think you're probably doing all you can. Others may have some other recommendations, but it's clear that you're keeping a close eye on him, so that's really good.

I hope the vet is able to help him get healthy again.

Many hugs!

Thank you so much LaraLove. [emoji]128522[/emoji]

I have been laying in bed with him most of the day and helping him when I can. He hasn't gone to the litter in awhile but he did use it this afternoon. He had a hard time getting inside it because of his back legs but once I get more little I have a lower one he can use tomorrow.

I am praying that my vet can help him and let me know what's wrong with him. I have accepted that if its his time to leave this world, he needs to be with his brother, but I can't handle if he's in any pain.
We lost his brother a year and a half ago and his health has declined since then.

Anyways thank you for your kind words and message.

I wish I could just say something to make you feel better, but I think what @LaraLove  said is the best....To just be with Domi.  Maybe put him on his favourite towel or blanket,  so its easier to carry him around, and also to keep him warm.

websites say it is dangerous to give a cat any OTC meds for pain(unless a vet said okay), because of liver metabolism.  Even the stuff my vet gave me seems to be bad for kidneys.

There is an organization called the Farley Foundation, so may be you can call those emergency vets in your area, and ask if you would qualify for this program.  It would be a question to ask.

Thank you so much Alpha Cat.

I would never give my cats any sort of meds unless my vet prescribed it. He is on Denamarin for pancreatitis right now but I stopped it today when I saw how sick he was. I will talk to my vet tomorrow about it.
Unfortunately, I do not qualify for the Farleh Foundation [emoji]128542[/emoji]. I have looked into the in the past. I just don't understand how a vet can turn away an innocent animal that is such pain or distress.

I just gave Domi some spcl chicken and rice food and he ate almost all of it like he was starving. I hope that's okay. He needs to water too. I'm wondering if he is dehydrated. I should have taken him to the vet last week but he seemed to get better. [emoji]128575[/emoji] I feel like a horrible cat mom cause I'm not helping my baby. He shouldn't have to suffer cause I'm an idiot. Oh dear God please forgive me and help my baby. [emoji]128591[/emoji]

Oh, @Adrianna25    I didn't mean to imply that you would give Domi any meds without a vet saying so,  I just was really surprised that we cannot give any OTC meds to our cats.  I thought there would at least be something even herbal that could help him.  But you said he was on Denamarin,  my cat was given Zentonil Plus, which sounds similar. Its has samE and milk thistle for liver function repair. But in my case it was not pancreatitis, it was some sort of infection causing jaundice, which turned out to be felv+ and fiv+.

I agree with you about some vets,  I am not really sure if they all would turn a sick pet away.  There has to be some that would not, but they always worry about getting paid, so they can pay their employees and bills.

Some may have payment plans...just ask them.

Maybe the humane society or other shelters could help.  Its worth a try to call and just ask if the humane society has a vet on site, or they know  some low cost vets.  Sometimes it all depends on who answers the phone.

Its good that your Domi ate.  Just leave his water close.   I don't think you are "an idiot".  Sometimes the timing of these illnesses never seem to work out on a work week.  They always seem to happen, when the regular vet clinic is closed.  Just have to deal with it as it comes.

Praying is good, but also get some rest (if at all possible), so that you can function tomorrow.

sending prayers to you and Domi.

Oh thank you. I am actually watching my baby die. Oh God what am I doing. I failed him. I promised to take care of him when we lost him brother and I didn't do it.

He stopped eating and can barely drink now. He hasn't used the litter since yesterday morning. Oh my God. Please pray for my baby. [emoji]128575[/emoji]

My beautiful Domi! God please take him to his brother. I don't know what to do for him. Do I let him sleep on my bed to be comfortable and take his last breath or do I pack him up and take him outside to the vet at 8:30? What is best?

I am so sorry you and your cat are going through this. It is a tough decision and nobody else can make it for you. It is hard to let them go, but there comes a point when we have to put them first. How is your cat now.

I think you should  take him to the vet when they open to be put to sleep.  There is no real telling how long he might linger if you don't, and he might be in a great deal of pain during that entire time.

I am so sorry you are going through this.

Please believe you are doing everything you can.  That is all any of us can do.  We make the best decisions and take the best care of our fur family that we can with the resources we have.  The most important thing any living being can give to another is love and I don't think there is any question you are not giving all the love you have to Domi.

Keep him close with you.  Carry him in a blanket or towel if you need to, and keep him safe and warm until you can take him to the vet.  Talk softly with him and stroke him gently if he is comfortable with that.  Hold a teaspoon or syringe of water to the side of his mouth and see if you can get him to lick a little water, or drip it very slowly in to the side of his mouth.  You can do this with wetted down pate food as well.

My girl Pal lost the power in her back legs when she was almost 21.  She had had arthritis for many years and when I took her to the vet I believed I would not bring her home again but the vet gave her an anti-inflamatory injection and said he thought it may be a bony spur pressing on her spinal cord and maybe it would improve.  It did improve and she managed back up on to her legs by the following day. Sadly for her she was too shakey and because she was blind it was too hard for her to move about anymore and I decided it was time for her to join her sister.

Domi looks precious, and I can tell he is precious to you.  My heart goes out to you as I remember being where you are now all too clearly just 3 1/2 years ago.

You have done all you could, you have gone above and beyond. What your baby needs now is you. You have been together for 17 years and watching him now is a horrible experience for you. My heart goes out to you, I wish I could hug you both. I pray if it is time for your baby to go, he goes in his sleep, and you won't have to make a decision at all. For now, just tell him how much you love him and be close. Bless you for caring so much.

When my dearest Toogie was near death, and could no long get on the bed, I made myself a bed on the floor around him.  I didn't want to try to pick him up, he was so sick and fragile, so I stayed with him on the floor.  Just hold your baby and remember all the good times you shared.

Thank you everyone for your caring thoughts and prayers. Domi & I decided it was time to take him to the Vet. At 8:30am he crawled inside his carrying cage and laid down. I picked up my mom on the way for support and we were able to see the vet right away. She is a caring and wonderful woman who examined Domi so carefully. After spending the day and night with him I knew it was time for him to go to sleep. We hugged and kissed but he was so tired. I let him go to meet his brother in Heaven. My two perfect babies are together again and they will come see me in my dreams tonight. Rest in Peace my beautiful Angel. Thank you for choosing me as your mommy 17yr ago. I will never forget either of you. You will live on in my [emoji]10084[/emoji]️ FOREVER!!!!

@Adrianna25...when you feel up to it, you can post something for Domi in the "crossing the bridge" forum.  I think that the mods, out of respect, usually close down a thread when a cat passes.

I am so sorry for your loss, your Domi is with my Sparky, up there.  They are both black cats, so I guess they will see each other and talk.

I'm so sorry you had to go through this experience, I have been through similar and believe it or not the responses to you by others as it was unfolding made me feel somewhat better about my perceived failures in treating my baby, who I loved and treated as a child (as best I could I guess). Please don't feel badly, 17 is a good long life and you both had a chance to say goodbye through it all. Take care.
