Our 2yr old, found feral ,  female cat is showing symptoms of staggering disease for the last week, but also has decreased appetite.Vet  tests for FIP and FelV are negative.  Balance is worse each day.Does'nt seem to be much good info on web about this in cats, but that this is fatal

I'm so sorry to hear your kitty is struggling. I see you've been to the vet, which is fantastic.  Have you spoken to him or her about this and what the symptoms could mean and what you should do?

Has she been checked for an ear infection?  That will sometimes cause kitties to lose balance.

Thank you tulosai and stephanietx for your replies .Yes, she was seen by our vet on Friday. She was negative for ear mites and her eardrums are fine. The vet was unsure of the cause. I was thinking  possibly a stroke but symptoms are worsening .Then, I thought of those cattle videos ,and she acts similar. I  went online and found little info about   'staggering disease'. They are encephalectic  diseases ,viral  infections. I didn't find anything about loss of appetite with this condition  Her attitude is normal ,she's not in any discomfort .Just would like to get some thoughts on how long she has. This doesn't seem to be a common sickness since my vet didn't know .She is a good huntress maybe she got infected by a bad mouse (we live in the country)?

I'd ask for a full blood panel, including a senior panel looking for weird diseases.

Yes Stephanietx, that sounds like a good next step. Her appetite is stable and she seems  to be  walking better with less staggering yesterday and today. Thank you very much for your help.

you (and your vet) could try looking up "ataxia" in cats...it is preferable to do this sooner than later imo. good luck

Sorry for not getting back sooner.  Her condition  has deteriorated since Weds 9th.She eats only liquid portion of her food We have been feeding her with a syringe. . We scheduled her for tomorrow.Today , she cannot walk. She just lays on the bed grooming, still has a good attitude ,and acting like nothing's wrong. We will put her down tomorrow. Thank you for your responses and concern. Her name is Monster.(Her scream scared our other cats).

I'm so sorry for you and so sad to hear the news.  This is a very difficult decision to make and our hearts are with you and your beloved cat.  You did all you could and now you are giving her the final gift you can give.

:yeah: In Monster's short life she's known what it's like to be cared for because of you. I'm sorry you couldn't help her more, but this way she will leave this life peacefully and loved. I'll be thinking of you, and I hope everything goes as well as it can tomorrow.
