I got a new cat two days from a young couple who couldn't have her anymore. She's about nine months old. They gave me a bag of Meow Mix, and I mixed that with a little of Solid Gold just to transition her off of it, but I don't think she's eating. I then tried Purina One's smart blend kitten food, and that was a no go either. So I tried four different types of soft foods, but the weird thing is that whenever she gets near and smells the canned food, she makes a gagging motion with her mouth. As of right now I decided to just give her only the Meow Mix since that's what thy were giving her, but I don't think she's touched it. She has used the litter, and I do believe she's drinking water. And I know cats tend to get anxious in new surroundings and won't eat, but I'm so worried about her; I don't want her developing something like fatty liver. This is the first time I've owned a cat in ten years, and I just feel like I'm failing her. So does anyone have any suggestions?

My first suggestion would be to take her to a vet, to check for teeth or gum problems.  A vet is trained to see things which we owners miss, like the colour of the gums, teeth, tongue.

Second suggestion, is to try and warm up the food slightly, since warm food attracts cats more. If you mix it with more water and make it into a soft paste or pate, it may work.  Also kitten milk might work.

Third:  is can you call the previous owners and ask if she did not eat regularly? They may help to know a routine.

sometimes even trying things like tuna water, or baby food can entice a cat to eat.....but make sure the ingredients do not contain onions.

I am sure others today, will offer more suggestions,  so keep posting throughout the day, and thanks for adopting her.

She definitely needs to see a vet to rule out any medical conditions and to have a good check up.  You can also schedule her spay, if she's not already spayed.  To help with the food, you could try adding a touch of water to the wet food and warming it up in the microwave for a few seconds (about 5 seconds) to enhance the aroma.  You could also boil a chicken breast in plain water with no seasonings, shred it, then add in some of the broth to make it the consistency of oatmeal and see if she'll eat that.  It's common for kitties in new environments to not eat for a day, or to eat at night when the house is quiet.  Good for you for noticing that she's not eating.  Don't let her go too long (like no longer than today) without eating and get her to the vet first thing Monday.  Also, don't change her food for about a month, until she's totally at home with you and in your home.
