My boy kitty who just can't seem to catch a break is now on Clavamox for swelling on his chin.  When I saw it I was terrified that it was a lump, but vet assures me it is swelling.  He did have blackheads there (despite using ceramic bowls) that I had thought was discoloration from what I assumed was cancer...but that was just the panic stricken mom in me talking. ;-)

Vet isn't sure what the cause of the swelling is yet, but believes either bacterial or fungal infection.  She pulled hair and scraped skin and checked for mange/mites and there were none.  The rest of the hair and skin scraping she sent off to the lab to grow.  Apparently fungus (if that's what it is) grows slow, so it will be two weeks or more before we know if it's fungus.

In the meantime, he is on Clavamox pills.  I didn't do my math right, and just realized this morning that the last three doses are scheduled for a time when I will be gone and a cat sitter will be taking care of my four kitties.  She's great at taking care of them, but my kitties are all very shy around everyone but my husband and me so they will hide and she may not even see them, so obviously can't give him his pills.  I do prepare his food ahead of time (he is also on lysine and lactoferrin) and keep it in the fridge so all she has to do when she comes is put the bowl of food in the room where he'll be and he can come out when he's ready.

I will call the vet to ask this on Monday, but in the meantime, does anyone know if I can mix the Clavamox pill into his food and put it in the fridge?  The first one would be the same day I'm leaving and he would've had his morning dose as scheduled, and the food will only have been in the fridge a few hours.  The last two would be the following day, so the food will have been in the fridge about a day.

In the alternative, does anyone know if there is a different antibiotic effective for skin issues that I could get from the vet that could be mixed in his food as per the above?  I know it's important to give the full course of antibiotics so I really don't want to just stop three doses (i.e. a day and a half) early (unless the vet says it's okay, which I will also ask on Monday).

Advice appreciated!

I assume the medicine can be mixed in the food (though not sure it can stay in food for that long or if kitty will eat the food with the med in it.)

I would suggest putting him in a secure place where the sitter can get her hands on him to medicate. Once meds are finished, he could be let out. I assume he will be separated from the other cats anyway if you are considering putting meds in his food?

Right, the plan is that the sitter will feed them in separate rooms and she will hang around the house in yet a different room until they've finished, before allowing them to mingle again.  Before our dog passed away, she used to always stay and watch TV and take a nap with the dog. She really is a great sitter.

After thinking about it further though, I wonder if it might be better to reduce time between doses in such a way that I can give him the full course before I leave.  If I give the pills every 9 hours instead of every 12, he would complete the course without the sitter having to give him any.  I know at some point this would mean me waking up in the middle of the night or very early in the morning to give him a pill, but believe me, it wouldn't be the first time I had to do that for one of my babies. ;-)   To my mind at least, this seems like a good solution--when I take pills myself I don't really worry about a few hours early or late--but of course I'm not a pharmacist and could be wrong.  Anyway, when I call the vet on Monday I'll propose this and see what they think, but if anyone here might know, I'd welcome their thoughts.

With Clavamox (and many antibiotics) they are suppose to get the med twice daily for a set length of days (typically 7-14 days, depending on what you are treating.) While the med *can* be given closer together than every 12 hours, upping the frequency and giving the med 3 times a day is *not* giving the medication correctly for the duration needed. You also risk over dosing your kitten and causing GI issues, as well as not treating the infection fully.

I have had to go out of town and leave a kitten crated so that his meds could be given to him properly. It was best for all involved and the easiest thing for my sitter to work with.
