VAT on vet bills, I disagree with this.

My cat Ernie was put to sleep yesterday after drinking antifreeze and for a stay which lasted 5 minutes, we was charged £190 including VAT. He was having seizures and had lost control of his bowels by the time he received the euthanasia injection.

Inspired by this, I have started a petition about abolishing VAT on vet bills, and hope that those who have or know anybody who has experienced high bills before will sign this.

I'm so sorry about the loss of Ernie.     How devastating for you.

Now I just have one question for you about this VAT on your bill, as I'm not familiar with it.  What exactly IS VAT?  Is it some sort of tax?  I'm in the U.S.A. and believe you are in another country, so maybe it pertains to your specific country?

Again, my sympathies regarding Ernie.

VAT stands for Value Added Tax and is standard throughout the European Union. It is added at point of sale to most goods and services, and currently stands at around 19.0% in most countries, though there are some things that are zero rated or have lower rates. FOr example, here in France if you employ a local artisan to do work on your house it only attracts 7.00% VAT. IN the US I believe you have a sales tax that is similar.
