Hi,

My "boo" marcello, is 12 yrs old, diabetic, (not currently on insulin but needs to be), and after a recent all day vomiting episode, he has been diagnosed with pancreatitis. He was given fluids, anti nausea/pain med: Cerenia, an antibiotic, & pepsid. My boo will not eat and i am very concerned. He hasnt eaten in 3 days, to date.

DOES ANYONE HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR CAT HAVING PANCREATITIS? If so, any recommendations? Any guidance is much appreciated.

Very Grateful,
Myboo

I'm so sorry your going through this with Boo. Pancreatitis is very painful. How was Boo's pancreatitis diagnosed?

Here's a document from Idexx that explains how pancreatitis is treated: http://www.idexx.com/pubwebresource...pec-fpl-treatment-for-feline-pancreatitis.pdf

You have "anti-nausea/pain med" grouped together so I'm not sure if that means he is getting two separate medications. Cerenia is an anti-emetic/anti-nausea medication. It does not help with pain. Pain management is important, as well as fluids. Did he only get fluids once?

My Sebastian has chronic pancreatitis. When he had his first severe episode, he was hospitalized on an IV for 4 days. We were on the brink of putting in a feeding tube. After his ultrasound, he came home, but I had to supplement his sparse eating with assist-feeding for almost two weeks.

Do take a look at the document I linked to above and talk to your vet about some of these treatment options if they are not already being done.

Go Holistic,
Thank you so much for your reply! The vet said "Cerenia" was an anti-nausea And pain reliver... he is not my normal vet. I brought marcello to an ER cat clinic. They gave him fluids while there. My normal vet called me today and wants marcello first thing tomorrow (admission). I have so many questions. After going through your link sent, i will reply again.

Grateful,
Myboo

Let us know how it goes at your regular vet.

Pancreatitis is usually "officially" diagnosed with an ultrasound and the specific fPL blood test offered by Idexx. This needs to be sent out Texas A&M.

Cerenia is not a pain reliever. It helps relieve discomfort associated with nausea and vomiting by blocking "substance P" in the brain. This is totally different from how pain medications work, which specifically target pain receptors in the brain. Sebastian still gets a maintenance dose of Cerenia Monday through Friday, but when he is in pain, he gets a separate pain medication. He was given a Fentanyl patch when he was hospitalized, which lasts for three days.
