Hi!  I adopted my cat in January and since have been trying out different foods from raw with a supplement to tiki tuna, but he had a hairball and vomited once, so I bought the chicken and pumpkin. After that he vomited two times, so I am trying the raw freeze dried turkey, which he might tolerate better. I thought a raw diet would prevent digestive issues, but I think I have given him too much tuna or chicken liver, which I added to his food.  Hopefully he will like the turkey freeze dry and we can stick with it, but I wanted to know which supplement can aid in digestion and hairball prevention. Thanks!

Hey

i find the best hairball preventative is regular brushing!  Get that dead hair outta there! :-)

As far as supplements for digestion, a probiotic (fortiflora as an example) can be very helpful, but if your cat needs a probiotic then he probably needs a vet visit as well.  Repeated vomiting suggests that there is an underlying medical condition that at the least needs a vet to rule out more serious issues and assist you with diet adjustments.

Welcome to The Cat Site.
For hairballs, I use egg yolk lecithin. For digestive purposes, I use probiotics, a human grade is fine, but it should have at least 10 billion active cell units. I've started using this one because it has more strains.
I hope he like the Freeze Dried Turkey too; in my opinion, it is better than tuna. Liver is an 'acquired' taste. Have you read any of the articles in the Raw and Home Made subforum. This is a good article to start with. It is important that you do so to ensure your kitty is getting ALL the nutrients he needs.

Hi Stephen

Yea, I brush him every day since he is a curly, fuzzy, longhaired adorable mess.  I started the raw freeze dried turkey today and he devoured it with such gusto as I have never seen him before, so I will stay with that mainly, alternating occasionally.  I have to get him to the vet anyway, just for a new patient check up. Thanks for taking the time to answer!

Hello, Ritz,

Thanks for the welcome and referring me to the Catcentric site, which proved to be very informative and up to date. I learned a lot reading some of the articles.  Noodles started on the raw rreeze dried today and he loves it with a vengeance. I will add an egg yolk a week for maintenance, since he just spat a small hairball just once.  If needed, I'll get the egg yolk lecithin supplement. Thank you for such a comprehensive answer.  I also read the findings on thiamine by the Tufts University, and the Zanthan Gum article, which somehow doesn't surprise me.

Cheers.

For hairball relief, I'll rather go with Egg Yolk Lecithin, Vet's Best Hairball Relief Tabs, Psyllium Husk or even slippery elm bark, never petroleum.

Hi, One,

No petroleum, got it.  Will do the yolk lecithin then. Thank you.

I uploaded some photos on the "bicolor" album.  Can you see them?
