Hello all,

so recently my cat has picked up this new little quark where she will lick the wall.... weird right?? lol It's been about 2 months now of her doing this, she doesn't do it all the time, but often enough where we have noticed it has become a habit of hers.

We all just thought she was being silly/weird like she usually is, I took a video of her doing this and my roommate showed it to her family. They love cats and got really concerned when they saw this, rather than find it funny. They said that she may be licking the wall to get whatever vitamin she may be missing in her diet.... I feed her Nutro MAX CAT Kitten food, she is almost one year old (April 2nd!!), I don't feed her anything else except for the occasional bite of chicken or cheese (she LOVES cheese lol). I took her to the vet a few days ago for a check-up (prior to knowing about the potential vitamin problem) and he said she is in good health and at a perfect weight.

I would like some opinions on a good quality supplement I could possible give her, or to just know that she is totally fine and just a strange little cat.. lol

let me know your thoughts :) any comment is appreciated.

When cats slick things that have clay in them, it's a sign of anemia.  I don't know about the wall though.  One thing for sure...I'm make sure that paint paint doesn't have lead in it...so many older paints had it in it, I think.

Does she always lick in the very same spot?  If so, I'd either wash that wall really well and see if it continues, or put a piece of furniture or something there and see what happens.  AND I'd get her blood checked just to be sure.

A blood check is a good start, but it doesn't cover all possible deficiencies.

I recall that when we were having unknown issues with one of our cats, we did a vitamin B test that was separate from the blood work, and required fasting and feeding within certain time-frames.

Ask you vet about which vitamins the blood work covers, then ask which ones it doesn't cover and if any of them could explain her behavior.

She does it on different walls, when I brought her home for spring break she liked the wall one time and she licked the new shower curtain my mother got for the guest bathroom (never been used so it was Dry). My apartment is relatively new so I know the paint isn't lead based.
She is known to go a little crazy when she gets into catnip, so we have always just assumed that was what she does on her "high" but I don't know now.

What are some other things I can look for that may be a symptom of a vitamin deficiency?

I am inclined to think that this might be anxiety-related. My little Tuxedo likes to gnaw on the stainless knobs of our vanity sometimes. We don't know why for sure, but had him checked and no problem with his teeth or gums. Licking things like plastic bags is very common in cats with no basis in vitamin deficiency, but just something in plastic that they are attracted to. There are different theories.

It's always a good idea to rule out other things like a deficiency just to be sure, and the only sure-fire way to do this would be to get blood testing done.
