I am so worried about my 12 year old rescue cat Shenanigans and I feel helpless. I just lost 3 of my babies, after doing everything  that I could to try to save them, and I don't want to lose another. I had a full work up and blood panel done on him yesterday and it showed nothing definitive. The vet yesterday said that he was certain it was kidney failure, but today the blood test results showed that Shenanigans'  BUN and CREA were within normal range. His test for diabetes was also fine. We have searched and searched on different sites for what my cat could have but all sources say either kidney or diabetes, which have been ruled out. I just don't know what to do. Any suggestions or input would be helpful.

His symptoms are: Stiffness in his back legs (not so much weakness, but stiffness)

                                    Lethargy

                                    Loss of appetite

                                    Drinking a lot of water

Whimpering and seems painful, but I don't know from exactly where

He has NO VOMITING or diarrhea, no sneezing or coughing, a normal sounding heart, but his third eyelids are out and I know he feels very sick.

All of the normal things that you find on a full blood panel (white blood cell count, red blood cell count, liver, anemia, etc) are all in normal range.

Tomorrow Shenanigans is going for an ultra sound and the vet is adding on a T4 (thyroid) to his blood test but that may also show no sufficient findings. In the meantime I am giving him SQ fluids, Nutrical, and trying to keep him comfortable. I fear I am running out of time, please anything you can think of that might save my cat!

Hopefully the ultrasound will show something.  Intestinal stuff like IBD usually produces completely normal lab findings.  IBD doesn't always include diarrhea and can cause a kitty to be anorexic.  I hadn't heard of it causing a kitty to drink a lot of water before though.  IBD can be painful also.

Hi

Can you explain the circumstances of the loss of the 3 other cats?  When did this happen? Did they all die of the same illness? Was there a diagnosis? Is there loss in any way possibly connected to your current cat's illness?

Has FeLV and FIP been ruled out?

I have no advise for you but want you to know I'll definitely keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. I can't imagine the pain and the desperation you must be feeling right now, please keep us posted on what you find out!

I can sure feel for you.  My 13 year old had blood works done, and all the tests and still could not pinpoint the cause of frequent UTI and diahrrea and listlessness. She drank a lot of water also.  We thought it was the kidneys but it came back ok.   The vet pretty much said she would need to be put down.  I could not do it as I had lost several of my older cats too in the last year. She is my baby.  After searching a lot on line, I decided to switch her to all grain free foods and I used a probiotic.  I thought it could be some reaction to her foods causing the distress. Basically is is IBD, the vet did say that.  4 months later now, she is great, healthy no diahhrea, no UTIs - her fur is super soft and oil free (it was oily and coarse from day one)  She acts like a 5 year old cat. I don't know if this will last, but she is happier than she has been in years.    Best of luck to you.
