Lilly and her Diarrhea

We got two kittens last week, and they just turned 6 weeks old 03/27/14, and because of their size the shelter the Foster mom we adopted them from was able to get all Vet work done. All their first shots(minus the rabies), spayed dewormed.

Our other kitten Willa, is 1.75 lbs and seems to have solid stool. Lilly has all loose stool, diarrhea. I got Anti-DIarrhea cream that she hasn't licked too much of it up. Since they're so young the eat almost all wet food and some dry. I try and monitor the amount of water they are drinking so I know they're hydrated, but they eat mostly(wet food) and dont drink water as much. Their mother was spayed and wasn't feeding them anymore and the foster mother said they eat wet food and some dry. They look more like 12 weeks old in size. We acclimated them for  a shorter time then recommended because we have a SMALL apartment. They know where the food located and litter box. She went on the cat bed today, and peed in our bed two nights ago.

Petco Cat specialist has told me it could be because of all the work done to her at such a young age, and that if the diarrhea doesnt go away after 3-4 more days to contact a vet. Now we are watching her often because of this, and frequently bringing her to the water and litter box. She wouldnt lick the cream medicine up and mixed it in her food she only ate a little. After their frequent cat naps we make sure they drink water and eat as needed. They both know to go in the litter box. We added more then a small layer as suggested by the foster mom because they like to dig more and bury and that could have been a reason she peed in the bed. Her stool is a normal color, no white pink or anything suggesting tapeworms.

Any of information would be great, I am posting just because they are like our children and I worry..

What is this anti-diarrhea cream you are giving her?  It sounds suspicious and may be a non-standard treatment.  Under no circumstances should you be giving her a human medication without the advice of a vet, doing so could harm or even kill her.

Kittens are fragile creatures and can die when an adult cat wouldn't.  I suggest an immediate vet visit monday, with a stool sample.  She could have a parasite that deworming doesn't treat (like coccidia or giardia) but regardless, diarrhea should be considered serious in a kitten, expecially one so young as yours.

I bought the diarrhea aid at Petco. Its NaturVet Anti- Diarrhea a liquid based off weight to be given. She didn't have any, I guess she didnt like the taste or smell. SHe just went about 15 minutes ago and it was light brown nothing else mixed in it. The foster mother has told me that all the procedures she received could be a reason to why she has it. Or stress. I have emailed two vets close by.and making sure shes drinking plenty water and plenty of wet food.

OK.  I read up on it and it is similar to pepto bismal without the dangerous aspirin additive, and it is only for non-contagious forms of diarrhea like stress or food based.  If she won't eat it (no surprise) you would need to carefully and gently squeeze it into her mouth, but i wouldn't use it unless a vet told me to.

You can also give her a very mild food like human baby food chicken stage one only.  On the advice of a vet you could also mix in a proper dose of metamucil fiber into her diet (usually by mixing it with a little water first) to help bind her up, but if it doesn't resolve very soon (1-2 days) you would want to test for parasites which can be dangerous at this age.

Good that you are keeping her hydrated. :)

Did she have diarrhea at the foster mom's house too?  Are you feeding her the exact same food?  Some kittens cannot take change easily, so if you aren't feeding the same food, I would find out what she was feeding her, and get the same food, at least for now.

Boy, 6 weeks IS awfully young to already have been spayed.  Usually they want them to be at least 2 lbs, or so I recall.  When did all this take place...just a few days ago?  Are you noticing any signs of worms in their stools, since they got dewormed at the same time.  Sometimes deworming takes more than just one time, BTW.

Poor little Lilly.  Be sure to take her back to the Vet if this doesn't clear up soon.  But her sister is doing fine?  They are both so young to be separated from their fur momma
.  But Lilly is cute as she can be, and I'm sure you will take good care of both of them

Thanks for that info. Stephen! I have stopped trying to give it to her. She just got up from a nice long catnap with her sister and had diarrhea again. This time she went straight to the litter box so shes getting better at that! Then she ate some more wet food.

Mrs. Greenjeans,

She suggested Whiskahs but we couldn't find it in petco, and got Friskies wet food. It said for kittens feed twice daily morning and evening but since they only eat wet we have to keep it available all day. I want them to get proper nutrients . Their mother has stopped feeding them when she got spayed herself.

They got All their vet work 03/25/14..Both their stool seem to be just light brown and nothing mixed in. She is very sleepy today, and not as much as willa her sister so i'm not sure if thats normal.

I have applied to a couple veterinarians in the area. they are closed until monday so I will have to call. They are due for dewormer twice more. 04/16/14 and 05/01/14.

Their sheets from the visit say this:

Pre -surgical examination: 75$

Anesthesia and pain medication 130$

Feline Ovario hysterectomy: 105$

it states she received a green tattoo for spay identification

Meloxicam 5mg/ml injection

Feline Distemper vaccine

Revolution Topical flea/earmite Prevention

The vets did not do the dewormer, the foster mother did that. It was Pyrantel and given on 03/26/14

Shes like my first kid to me and I worry very much. SHe is still playful and hyperactive when she isn't cat napping.

The foster mother does know how to apply the Dewormer by the shot and I'm pretty sure she did it on her own. She works at the shelter and has had many litters.
