I live in a basement apt of a house (rent basement from landlord) and in Feb I rescued a pregnant cat who ended up giving birth to 5 kittens in my bedroom before I could get her to a foster home. Due to this, I ended up "fostering" the mom cat (Sweetie) and her 5 kittens from Feb- May. While they were in my bedroom, there were some accidents on the carpet which was to be expected since they were babies-had small litterboxes everywhere but... I have cleaned the carpet promptly with enzyme cleaner and pet odor remover each time there was an accident.

However, the urine smell would appear once in a while so I bought a small carpet shampoo vaccuum and shampooed 2 areas where there have been several accidents. About 2 weeks ago, the smell seemed to get stronger. So, I have moved all furniture away from that area and shampooed the carpet THREE times with Bissel pet odor remover, sprinkled a special powder which was to remove the smell. The smell has lessened but is still there.

What can I do to get rid of the smell?! I want to try to resolve this without letting my landlord know.

Any suggestions??
I was thinking of pulling the carpet up in that corner, cut out the padding (if there's padding) in that area and put down some new padding then put carpet back down. I feel that would be a bit EXTREME and would prefer to avoid that if possible but would that work??

My suggestion is to get a black light (not the bulb kind but the long tube ones) & shine it close to the carpet. If you see any glowing spots, that's urine. It just might be in spots that you don't see or think of and this will help you spot treat those areas better. Other than that, I don't have much advice. Good luck!

Hi Shell! Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I also bought one of those black ultra violet lites to find spots and focused on these areas. It helped with most of the spots- only these 2 areas that I still can smell..

What you need is a good enzyme cleaner and also a needle and syringe. You want to inject the cleaner down into the nap of the carpet at an angle so it can work on the stain underneath. Either that or tear up your entire carpet and padding and replace it with new.

I know that you aren't supose you use anything but the carpet cleaning stuff in the carpet cleaning machines but my last place I lived in I had a dog that had a a very weak bladded and would pee all over the place even if I was only out of the house to go to the store so I know how it is! But the one thing that did WONDERS on the carpet was OxyClean! I mixed that with the hot water in my Steam cleaner and it not only cleaned my carpet but took the bad smell out! It will be the only stuff I will ever use to clean carpets again!!!

We have a puppy so I am very familiar with the yuckky smells of urine. I found out that there is only one enzyme cleaner that works really well for me. Also if you have used any other products an enzyme cleaner won't work as well. I would run some plain hot water through your shampooer to make sure the area is free of all prior cleaners and then use Natures Miracle it eliminates the odor without covering it up with perfumes. (I tried on from Wal Mart first and the smell of the enzyme cleaner gagged me) You can get Natures Miracle online, at Petsmart, F&S, there are many places.

My Mom used that in her steam cleaner & it really does work, but be very careful around your wooden baseboards. She splashed some on the wood & it took the varnish completely off!

You could also contact a carpet cleaning place and ask them what they use for pet stains. They might even sell you some.

THANKS YOU GUYS!!! I really appeciate all the advice given here. I shampooed that area again recently and it seem to lessen but I will try some of the new suggestions also because I want the smell OUT 100% especially since it's mylandlord's home. I don't want to get in trouble with him but can't stand sleeping in bedroom smelling of urine.. It has lessened now- can only smell if I get CLOSE to the carpet....
Will clean again this weekend and let u guys know if it works or not..

This is one reason why I LOVE TCS so much!! Because people are so HELPFUL..
