He is eating and acting good. He is moving around with no pain. But it seems like he likes to just sit at his water bowl and just continue to drink. I don't know why he is doing this. Can he be dehydrated? Should I put the water bowl up so he doesn't drink to much?

Hi

First, why is your cat on Bupe?  What dosage and are you giving it sub ligual (between gums or under the tongue)?

Buprenorphine is given for pain, often post surgically, and i don't see any side effects connected to thirst, so i would be more concerned that the extra water drinking is from some other medical cause.

Does your cat have any history of kidney disease or diabetes?  Has he been eating normally?

Here is a link on Bupe for cats and includes side effects.

Regardless of any of the above, I would contact your vet.

Remember that Buprenorphine is an opioid that targets pain via the central nervous system.  Some cats do have reactions to it.  Our older cat did.  Her pupils got really weird.  One pupil dialated and one contracted, and there was no movement when the light level changed.  So we had to put her on Tramadol instead.

Even though excessive thirst is not listed as a side effect, it might be indicative of a reaction.  Definitely talk to your vet.
