So I work for a vet and we had someone bring in a kitten this morning that couldn't even lift it's head up.  It is 1/4 the size of it's littermates (they brought in one of them to show us), and she is really skinny.  She was super dehydrated.  We gave her some dextrose today and then have been feeding her often throughout the day.  She is starting to eat a little bit on her own, and perked up and is meowing for food and attention.  Any tips on what I should do?  She weighs only 6 oz and it says to feed her like 56oz per day?  Really?  That seems like such an awful lot, she was having issues with me feeding her 3cc at a time today.  Somehow at work I got designated to be the 'kitten' raiser LOL, so she is home with me.

Here are some pictures of the little bugger.....her name is Mouse and YES she is warming my hubby's heart......we already have 5 cats but you never know.

Awwww. What a cutie.

You are doing everything right.  Please weigh her daily to make sure she is gaining.

Please god do not feed her 56 ounces a day
Normally by about 4 weeks a kitten would be consuming around 100 cc a day.  However, yours is clearly very small and behind the curve so I'd not be alarmed if she is not drinking that much as long as she is gaining weight.  That is really the critical factor. For the next 24 hours until you weigh her again, I would just feed her as much as she will eat as frequently as you can manage- ideally every 2 hours.  If she has then gained enough, all is well, just continue on.  If she has not gained or has gained very little it will be necessary to force her to eat more. But I wouldn't get bogged down in the precise amounts until you know if she's gaining or not, since if she's gaining then she is getting enough.

Agreeing with all above.  :)  this with 56 oz must be some typo somewhere, perhaps a , misplaced.decimal.  Take it a tenfold down, and you will get  into the correct zone (a little too much, but there).

Tulosai has right, her being unusually small, you cant take it by standard doses, you must play it by ear.  Balibabies rule of thumb may be useful.

The kitten is not just a neglected runt of the litter, she is prob one of those "mini-cats",  She will always be very petite.

The problem in the long view, is you never know for how long you will have her. She may live many happy years, but she may also crash anytime while growing up.  two typical  turning points are about 3 months, and about 1 year.

Hope for the best, but dont despair too much if she goes away.

But she is although such mini petite, otherwise nicely well shaped, has already curious and playful eyes, she has apparently  much will to live.

I m hopeful.   :)

This your DH having her at his heart is not only funny & tricking hour DH into it.  It is very useful too!  Both the warmth as such., and the nearness.

It will reduce her lonelessness.  Increase her will to live, to continue to live.... Increasing her odds rather dramatically.

A furry, stuffed animal as extra company may also help.

*vibes!"

Thank-you guys.  She is up to 7oz now (she was 6 & 1/2 oz)  She is really starting to come out in her personality.  Starting to play and explore etc.    So I should be feeding her maybe 7cc per day?  Right now I have the mix of a/d, nutrical and milk replacer mixed all together and she is eating a little bit of it on her own as well as I am syringe feeding.  However she did steal some of my older cats raw so I may switch her to that instead as she is eating a lot more of that than she is the canned food mix.

She is up to 7 & 3/4oz today, she doesn't seem to be getting bigger other than in her belly LOL~  She sure is playful today.   She does seem to have a bit of an eye infection though.  So started her on ointment for that.

Little Mouse is doing really well, she is up to 10oz now and is more and more active every day.  She is eating a combo of canned a/d and raw and is loving every meal.  She is really really playful which is good.  We are probably going to keep this little girl as she is too adorable and has stolen our hearts.
