Hello! Thank you for all the useful information provided on this site! It's been very helpful since a stray adopted me and (of course) she was pregnant! Oreo had her litter about 5am this morning. I was not present but found her with four kittens and had to leave for work. At that time my boyfriend was present for the birth of the fifth (probably the runt) and he said she did expel the placenta and eat it.

She tended to her kittens all day while the boyfriend was home. When I came home and checked on her, she nearly jumped out of her nest to greet me. I stopped her of course as her kittens were nursing at that time. I stayed with her a while as she seemed to want me around and then went about my business. Maybe an hour later i checked on her again and the kittens were asleep. She left them and began seeking me out and wanted me with her again. She was meowing and wanted to be petted. She left her kittens in the nest in favor of my attention. I read that queens rarely leave the nest on the first day and am concerned that she may be ignoring her kittens. She did tend to them after she heard a kitten cry but was in and out of the nest and didn't settle down until I sat next to the nest and pet her.

Is it normal for queens to leave their litter so early?

She also attempted a nest move a couple times and always seems to take only the runt to the new nest, then change her mind and returns to the old nest. Is this normal?

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you.

...with the cats...
congratulations to oreo! i'm sure she's very proud of her babies.

when oreo attempted to move her nest, bringing just the runt to the new nest and then going back to her other kittens and not moving them....did she bring the runt kitten back with her to the other kittens?

i would keep a close eye on the kittens, especially the runt kitten. it would be a good idea to give that runt kitten some KMR (kitten milk replacement) -- you could use an eye dropper. read up on the proper position for kittens to be fed KMR with an eye dropper -- there is a proper position for this. and i would suggest weighing the kittens every day, making note of their weights, in order to make sure they're all steadily gaining weight. kittens can become ill and "go downhill" extremely quickly, so if any kittens aren't gaining weight daily that would be an indication that a vet visit is in order. make sure the kittens stay warm, very important for them.

Hi! Thank you! She brought the runt back to rejoin the rest of the kittens. She's nursed all of them several times today, runt included. I will absolutely weigh the kittens daily. She only seems to nest with them when I'm around. She leaves them for me when they fall asleep. Is this normal?

Is she hungry? Queens need a great deal of food maybe she is looking for you for food or maybe she just needs some love. Do keep giving us updates It is so interesting. Post photos of the lovely family!

I will post a few photos once I switch to a computer. :) she's currently nursing the kittens next to me and she is alert and looking at me. She left no sign of giving birth, so I assume she ate all placentas. My boyfriend fed her once and I left some food for her which she ate a little bit. I'm concerned that she won't nurse her kittens when I have to work tomorrow.

I also took in a pregnant stray a little while ago and she gave birth almost 3 weeks ago, for the first 3 days and nights I had to have the box on my bed as she wanted to be near me, luckily for me I don't work so was able to be here for her. In your case I'd suggest just making sure she's confined to the one room with the kittens in, make sure she has everything she needs including plenty of food and hope for the best, maybe have a heating pad under the kittening box so they stay warm if she's not with them. You said she went back when they cried so I'm sure she would do the same with you not around so as long as she's in the same room where she will hear them I'm sure all will be fine.

I think she was attempting to move the nest to something more cave like.  The box I made for her (that she moved her nest to after birth) had an open top and she seemed more settled when I closed it.  Someone also suggested she was probably not separating them, but moving them one by one as a survival strategy - something they would do in the wild.  All kittens are doing well, staying warm and nursing regularly!  We have her set up in a room by herself and have a camera set up so we can check up on her without bothering the nest too much.  I did manage to snap a quick picture of two of the kittens today.  Thanks for the responses!
