Question about Probiotics!

I've been reading around and some people have their cats on Probiotics when feeding raw, especially when transitioning to raw from a canned diet and I noticed that Nexabiotic is a popular one with some people on this site. Some of you are giving your cats 1/4 of a capsule twice a day (approx 7.5 billion CFU daily) and others are doing 1/2 a capsule twice a day (15 billion CFU daily).

I know there isn't a 'right' choice but I've given one of my cats Salmonella before and I definitely want to do Probiotics before I begin the transition and would like some recent feedback on if you guys are still using this particular kind and how much you prefer to feed. Or do you prefer to use a different kind?

I actually just bought this on advice of another member; I needed to alternate probiotics. It contains more strains in a greater number than a number of other probiotics. I'd been using Natural Factors double strength 10 billion active cell units. (Ritz throws up if she goes too long without food, especially if I fed her red meat on an empty stomach.)
I just started Ritz on the Nexabiotic, one capsule a day at night. I sprinkle it on her raw food. Seems fine with it.

That's great to hear! Thanks for letting me know. I just ordered a few months worth online so as soon as I give them some probiotics for a few weeks, I will begin the raw food transition

I really like the Nexabiotic - it's the only one I know of that combines strains of lactobacillus, bifidobacterium AND S. boulardii, which is a yeast-based probiotic that just has so many benefits.

Thank you! I started giving my cats 1/2 a capsule each, twice a day (1 capsule a day each) for the past 3 days and they are fine with it. Next week I will start to transition from grain free canned to commercial raw with probiotics. I have stocked up on Rad Cat (chicken, turkey & lamb) and Primal (pheasant, venison and rabbit).

As soon as they are 100% eating commercial raw, I will then try to get them on Frankenprey
They are 8 years old and 3 years old so I'm hoping they work with me!

At that point, I'm sure I will have a TON of questions, although I am learning a lot from the threads already here.

One question that I do have for now is do you think that I should get a full blood panel test, urinalysis, all that stuff done for each of them right before I start to try Frankenprey and then have the tests done again a few months later? Only because I am a compete worrywart and am terrified that even if I follow the 80-10-5-5 model (with a weekly egg-yolk and sardine) I might still be messing something up somehow.

When was the last time blood work was done? If it's been a year, it's time to do it anyway. But basically, nutritional deficiencies typically take some time to develop - and most won't show up in blood work. The most common would be using too much or too little calcium, and that definitely won't show up in blood work. Cats (people, dogs - all mammals) will rob their own bones for it (typically the jaw), so it definitely won't show up in blood work. The problem shows up as "slack jaw" where the jaw becomes rubbery. Again, this can be corrected with proper supplementation. But just err on the side of too much calcium - and that results in constipation. So either use eggshell or freeze dried bone to target the proper Ca:p ratio and don't worry about it, or feed enough bone that they're "just" not constipated, and you should be good to go. :)

Vitamin A is one that will present symptoms but not in blood work - and if you feed the right amount of liver, it isn't an issue. In the *complete* absence of vitamin A, a deficiency will show up in about 3 months, and no permanent damage gets done - adding it to the diet solves the problem (I don't know offhand what the symptoms are). We warn about too much vitamin A frequently here - but cats have a very high tolerance for A. The only recorded vitamin A toxicity in the literature is when a cat was fed ONLY liver. !!!! (Can you imagine?) So just err a little to the high side on the liver, and no worries. :)

Some feeding even PMR supplement taurine, just because it's so important. If you're able to include heart in the meals several times a week, you shouldn't need to worry about it. The darker cuts of meat tend to have more taurine: thigh vs breast; pork shoulder is high in taurine. But if you're concerned, you can supplement. If you want to supplement their complete daily need, use 250mg of taurine just sprinkled onto their food daily. :)

Just wanted to add a note about the Nexabiotic.  I started using it after reading posts at this site.  I adopted a cat, about 5 months ago that was going to be put down in 2 days by our local shelter, so knew nothing about him.  Vet guesstimates he is about 6 years old.  Turns out he has Coronavirus and Clostridium Perfringens (like IBS in humans).  When I got him, his fecal matter was like small, wet cow patties and smelled horribly.  I tried probiotics the vet gave me, but it did nothing.  After reading on here, I tried the Nexabiotic.  I give him 1 2x daily sprinkled in his food.  After 2 months he was producing normal stools.  I boarded him at the vet for a week when I was out of town and forgot the Nexabiotic.  They used theirs and I continued them until used (since I'd paid for them).  He began having the bad stools again.  I got him back on the Nexabiotic and he was normal again within a couple weeks, so I know they are the reason.  I don't feed him raw meat, but do a bland Rx canned food and dry food.  I may try cutting down to 1/2 pill twice a day, though, and see.  I had no idea about the dosage and didn't think a probiotic could hurt, even if given more than needed.  This has been a great website for getting information.

Maybe you should tell your Vet about the Nexibiotic

This has probably been mentioned. So I've started my cat on Nexabiotic (the first day was Thursday) administering 1/2 capsule both AM and PM. He has been having diarrhea for about a month possibly more. Should I see a difference in his stool in just these few days or is it common to have to keep giving it to him for a few weeks to see improvement? He has IBD.

I saw an improvement with my kittens after 2-3 days.
