Hi everyone, One of my cat's Loki was diagnosed with Urinary Tract Disease earlier this week and I'm just curious to hear other people's experiences with this. I brought him in and they did a urine sample and x-rays. He is now on Clavaseptin and Phenoxybenxamine. He's also on a special wet food for U-T health for two weeks. After that both my kitties will be on a wet food diet with a possibilty of a bowl of dry food out if they get hungry. Thanks!

Keeping him on wet food is the most important thing and it's the healthiest thing for your other kitty as well.  Many people mix a little water in with their wet food to increase the water intake more.  Some kitties drink more out of fountains, others don't.  One of mine never would use the fountain and I don't think the other one drank anymore but it's worth a try.

Just people's experiences. I've never dealt with anything like this and I'm just wondering how people's cats have recovered or worsened or anything like that.

Is it an infection only? Those usually clear up with an antibiotics course. It is good to use a probiotic during and after the antibiotics. When on the antibiotics, gibe probiotics 2 hours after the antibiotics to prevent the probiotics being killed off by the antibiotics.

It is best to avoid dry food in UTI kitties. Dry food will cause urine to be more alkaline, which promotes growth of bacteria. Dry food will also dehydrate your kitties so that there is less kidney and urinary tract cleansing.

It is Urinary Tract Disease. His Urine sample was red with blood and he had very very high alkaline levels and a very high count of red blood cells. He will be staying on a wet food diet with the possiblitly of some dry food left out throughout the day.

Hi!

I just joined here because my cat was diagnosed with the very same thing! Same verdict on her urine sample as well. Did your Loki have any sediment or crystals in his bladder? My cat does and I am so anxious for her to be back to normal :(

I think if you leave out any dry food, you should probably use prescription urinary food then.  At least that's my take on it, although I've never (luckily) had a cat with urinary issues.  From everything I've read about it, they needs lots of moisture, as in canned food, get them to drink as much as possible, and no stress.  Here is an article on getting cats to drink more that might be useful:  http://www.thecatsite.com/a/tips-to-increase-your-cat-s-water-intake

As far as other people's experience, if you do a search under "flutd" at the top of the page you will get all kinds of threads on this topic. Here's just one of them:  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/268988/update-on-my-kitty-flutd

Update: Loki went back in for another sample after he finished his urinary tract health food and antibiotics and his alkaline levels had declined. The vet is now thinking that it may be stress related (Loki is a nervous fellow having come from Animal Control) So he is now on Medi-cal Calm dry  food and it is working wonders on his personality. So far so good I haven't seen him straining to pee at all and he seems very happy! And to answer Pearlteeth, He had no kidney stones or crystals in the sample or the xray.
