Confused about good smells to comfort your cat and smells that cats do not like. It sounds like from previous threads that cats pee (I hate that word) in locations where they like the smell. i.e.: bleach, litter box that is unscented b/c they don't like the smell of scented litter. Here are some questions I am confused about: 1) What is the deal with rubber backing on carpet? Do they like it or not like it if you are supposed to get rid to it Im assuming they like the smell and that's why they choose to pee on it. 2) Feliway Room Plug In: They are comforted by the smell--confused--do I put it where I DON'T  want them to go to the bathroom (meaning where they are going and should NOT be going)? I would think since it comforts them I would put it near litter box b/c they want to go pee where they are comfortable i.e.: quiet place away from other animals etc…---Confused about where to place the plug in or where to spray the Feliway spray. 3) Citrus--they DON'T like it? So spray it on or around areas they are peeing that I Don''t want them to pee. right?--same with VODKA--cat's DON't like smell, right? So they are likely to pee on things they like smell and where they are comfortable and NOT pee in areas where they don't like smell??? Aren't they supposed to like smell (No smell) of litter? And if they like or are comforted by smell of the Plug In then why put it where I don't want them to pee??? Sorry for confusion as this site is fabulous! Just want to make sure I get it all straight! Thanks!

Welcome to The Cat Site.
From what I've read, cats are more likely to pee where they've urinated before. Which is why it is really really important to use an enzyme based cleaner like this one.
The first time they pee outside the box, well, it could be anywhere, depending on the reason.
Feliway is a synthetic copy of the feline facial pheromone that cats use to mark their territory as their own; it comforts the cat. You plug it where the cat stays the most (in my case, the living room and 2nd bedroom).
Every cat is different; while *most* cats don't like citrus or bleach, there are some that love both scents. You just have to experiment.
One smell most cats like is the owners: yours! That's why when I have to take Ritz to the vets I cover her carrier with the blanket both she and use.
I am not sure why you are asking the question: has your cat(s) urinated outside the box? If so, this could be a medical issue and the cat needs to see a vet. Or maybe the cat likes to urinate in one box, and defeacate (poop) in another.
Finally, if you haven't already, there are several articles here about litter boxes. Litter box problems are addressed here.
