My kitten, Kiki, is about 4-6 months old right now.  She is my families second cat. A couple months ago, my family and I were feeding the cats whenever they asked- I counted it up and it was 5 times a day on average. Soon, both Kiki and Berbol(my other cat) were overweight. You could see when Kiki walked, her sides stuck out(oh and she is neutered) . It did not help that about a week after I began noticing their obesity, we got midterm break.  My family went to Poland, and the cats were left in the care of a first-time dog-owner, my mom's best friend. When we got back, the cats were fatter than ever. So I put them on a diet, I decided it would do good for them, and I was the only one in the family who seemed to want to do something. I didnt want my cats to suffer later on in life because of what we did.

So, I decided that I would feed them three time a day- a handful of high-quality dry food in the morning, either dry or wet food(same amount at every feeding time) after school (about 3-4pm) and then in the evening (6-8pm), usually dry food (occasionally when my parents are preparing meat, they give some to the cats, and once in a while my parents buy some fresh chicken hearts for the cats). They've been on this diet for about a month now, but there is one problem- Kiki cant seem to get enough. Her weight has certainly gone down now, but whenever I feed the cats, Kiki literally gulps down her food then proceeds to stealing Berbol's. I've noticed that Kiki surprisingly is the dominant cat, and Berbol is a rather skittish cat( he is neutered too, an starting to get old), so I always sit with them as they are eating and watch her. I scold her if she takes his food.

I know this is a long story an all, but I want You to know all the details so that you can help me. I've been reading forums and I'm wondering if I am feeding Kiki to little.

Thnx in advance, BerbDCat :D

You said kiki is 4-6 months old yes? Three times a day I would say if sufficient my year old cat gets a 85g serving of wet food 3 times a day once at 6am or there about once between 12 and 1 and then once at about 5:30-6 in the evening. Lilly for posterity sake is about a year old now she used to be on a combo of kitten wet food and kibble but i noticed she disliked drinking so much when eating kibble (she'd screw her face up something awful) so I transitioned to all wet much better for her! Has a high protein content and moisture to. To solve Kiki's greed once she has eaten her meal take her bowl a way and if it is possible feed Berbol his food away from Kiki on his own this way she can't steal his food. She's wolfing the food as she's used to getting up to five meals a day. Soon she will realize the limit is three and begin to take her time with her food. Its a patients game but it will eventually sort its self out. I'd limit to giving them any prepped meat or chicken hearts to a very RARE and SPECIAL treat. Don't forget treats should be taken into account when it comes you your kitties diet. Lilly gets a couple of crunchy chicken and cheese treats every few weeks or if she's been especially co-operative during her regular grooming sessions. But she is given then sparingly like only 3 of these tiny treats each time.

Sorry if I sounded at all preachy but if they are fed chicken hearts and meat wether cooked or otherwise as a treat often they will probably start to turn their nose up at regular kitty chow!

Its ok, my mom came from the countryside, and shes like: When I was your age, the only thing cats are was fresh meat. *Holding meat* This is pure heath for cats.

Oh I know its a lot better for them if it also hae the appropriate amount of fat bone ect! But if you are wanting to feed a combination of canned kibble diet your bettter off limiting the amount of raw meet she has to sporadic threats as she will realise it is indeed tastier and want that over the food you as her owner wan't to give her.
