I just adopted a 15 week old DSH from the pound (Beauregard Cattington Cuddlesworth). The vet made fun of him today for being chunky (5.7 lbs), and because I'm new at this, wanted to know if anyone had advice on how much to feed him. (dry food, purina kitten or science diet kitten formula) He's crazy laid back, which is why I got him, but isn't non-stop playing/active like some kittens are. I've been leaving a full bowl of dry food out because he came to me with a URI and I wanted his body to have plenty of fuel, but just had him put on another antibiotic to try and knock it out (finally) for good, and am going to need to get him on a regiment. Sorry for the length, but any help would be greatly appreciated!

At less than 4 months old I would still free feed.  Most people (in my experience) free feed until their cat is around 1 year old.  I think that can sometimes be a poor decision, but 4 months would be VERY and unusually young to begin limiting food intake.

Can you call the vet back and ask what he or she would recommend? I foster a lot but have literally never limited a kitten's food intake that young.
