Hello everyone,

One of my kittens Chloe seems to always try drink my coffee! I drink normal coffee (with caffeine) so I don't let her drink any of it because I know caffeine is bad for cats.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows if decaf coffee is safe for cats to drink? I did google it but couldn't find an answer. I'd of course use some cat milk when making the coffee instead of normal milk.

It'd be nice if anyone knows the answer. I'm sure Chloe would love it if she could have a cup of coffee with me! lol

Thanks,

Sarah

These are my little girls. You might have seen the pic already in another thread! Chloe is the one on the right and Sophie is the one with the little black nose.

I thought the reason coffee is bad for cats is because of the caffeine, so thought maybe because decaf coffee is without caffeine it'd maybe be ok? I'll not give her any yet and will ask my vet next time I'm there.

Caffeine is poisonous to cats but coffee also contains high levels of theobromine which is also very toxic to cats.

Oh I understand now. Thanks for the advice. I'd never let my girls have anything I thought could possibly be harmful without checking first and that's why I made the thread to ask about the decaf coffee.

But coffee doesn't have any theobromine :dk:. Tea, yerba mate, and chocolate do. Not coffee though. http://www.bioprofilelabs.com/TheobromineContentCoffeeTeaInstantCocoa.htm ("all coffees tested in this study didn’t show any theobromine"). Also backed up by a bunch of bodybuilding sites because I guess they look for the best sources of theobromine :tongue2:. Coffea arabica is listed as a source of theobromine on Wikipedia but it doesn't seem like any makes it into the drink.

I dunno. I don't think I would give coffee to a cat, even decaf. Doesn't seem worth whatever risks there may be. A couple licks would probably not be dangerous though.

That's really odd !
I don't know what to believe now

The UK Food Standards Agency say that it does contain theobromine - unless I'm reading it wrong ?

Here's the link

Well, .5 mg is practically nothing. . .it would take a great deal more than that to be dangerous to a cat or dog (200 mg/kg is a fatal dose)

With the caveat that I never, ever let me cat drink it, does anyone know why the smell of coffee might be so attractive to a cat? My Maine Coon is always trying to knock over my mug to get some. It has to go beyond the milk in the coffee. She's really crazy about the scent.
