This is my Nicholas.  we found him lost in a desert bush, crying out for help. Nicholas is a year and a half old now.  He was so happy and healthy, a joy to have around all the time. I love him so much. About 2 months ago at only 16 months old he developed FLUTD or FIC. We have been battling this for 2 months. He has blocked 3 times and is currently in the hospital with a catheter, IV fluids and meds to help with the pain. He may have to have the PU surgery. I will find out tomorrow.  We started a campaign with GoFundMe Help Save Nicholas to help support this expensive procedure. I would do anything for my Kitten. He is so young and still has so much life to live. I'm confused weather to use the Canin S/O or Hills CD. They have mixed reviews.

I am sorry that you and Nicholas are going through this. Some cats do seem predisposed to FLUTD issues, even at a young age. For some with recurring blockages, the PU surgery can be a lifesaver.

As for the Rx foods, what did the urinalysis show as the cause of the blockages? The Rx foods will only help in the case of struvite crystals. Is that what the urinalysis showed?

Yes, he has starvite crystals. His surgery is in the morning. It has been an up hill battle for 2 months. He doesn't like the Hills Chicken CD, so until the Hills Ocean CD was ordered and arrived, the vet put him on Royal SO. Then he blocked for the 3rd time the day after the Hills Ocean CD came in. He didn't even have a chance to eat but one small meal of it. I am so confused and worried.

Hi Laura,

Just wondering how things went with the PU surgery with Nicholas?

I read your initial post about the blockages, and hope that with the surgery things can improve for your little guy.

My young tuxedo was very recently diagnosed with struvite crystals but he was not blocked nor had he been having any difficulties urinating. The crystals were found by chance through a routine urinalysis. I am currently feeding RC S/O canned for the next two weeks to help dissolve the crystals. I chose this over a Purina product that was also offered, as I have some experience with the RC products. The canned wet food isn't too bad for ingredients.

I sent a reply earlier, but they said they need to review a link I added. So I'll just reply without the link.

Nicholas surgery went well, without complications. They are sending a culture out to see exactly what kind of bacteria he has, so they can send him home with the correct antibiotics. He is on antibiotics though...and pain medication. He came out of the anesthesia growling and scratched up the assistant's arm pretty badly. They gave him a low dose of tranquilizer to calm him down. He was peaceful when I visited, but I could tell he was hurting. I feel so badly for him, but I know this saved his life.

They are watching him closely for the next few days, and all is well by friday he will come home. It will be a nice birthday present for me. All I want is for him to be happy and healthy again.

Awww .. of course you want him to be healthy and happy! Glad to read that the surgery went well.

It's tough going through this knowing that they don't always understand what is happening to them or that its going to make them well, or feel better. Hopefully his recovery will go really well.

Positive vibes and warm thoughts for you both.
Please let us know how things are going.
