Some people really make me angry

Hi everyone,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place! I'm still quite new to this site and I've only posted in the cat health section so far after one of my little girls had an accident and broke her leg. She's had surgery and is recovering well though :)

Anyway, so yesterday I was looking on a website called Gumtree (like craigslist, but used quite often here in the UK) at kittens. I already have 2 lovely kittens, Sophie and Chloe who I love very much, and I don't really have any intentions of getting any more cats at the moment because I want to make sure that if I was to adopt any more cats/kittens I'd have enough money to pay their vet bills and insurance costs and 2 is enough for me right now.. I just like to look at pictures of the cute little kittens sometimes!

I came across one post on there where some woman was selling her 7 month old kitten because she's getting a puppy and wont have time for the cat.. The thing that angered me the most though, is that she'd previously rehomed another kitten (I couldn't view the ad description because it was some time ago) and also an 8 month old dog because "his not getting the exercise so he deserves better".

It really disgusts me that some people just adopt pets and then decide they don't want them anymore and then decide to get another, and I guess the cycle will repeat itself.. I wonder how long it'll be before this new puppy she's getting is listed because she's getting another animal instead.

It really upset me reading about it.. I don't know how someone could put an animal through that.. It's settled at a home with owners it thinks loves it, then the owner just decides they're bored of it and want something else and so just get rid of it as if it's just a worthless object and it's time for an upgrade.. I really wish people like that could be banned from owning pets because it's really not fair for the pets they bring into their life and then just discard

I wish I could adopt the cat so at least I could make sure it'd have a loving home where it'd be well cared for, but my situation isn't the best right now. The last few months I've not been working because of illness, and I'd worry that I couldn't provide for all it's needs. She's also not received any vaccinations or been spayed, even though she's 7 months old, and I don't think I'd be able to afford all that along with the pet insurance at the moment.. When I got Sophie and Chloe my situation was better. I was studying full time as well as being self employed and I was making a decent income and before making the decision to adopt them, I had the money set aside for their vaccinations, spaying, pet insurance, etc.

I hope it's ok to write about it here! I just needed to rant a little about it because it really upsets and angers me.

Not much you can do unfortunately. There are a lot of ******** people in this world, and Craigslist and its international counterparts tend to attract a large portion of these kinds. Look at the bright side, at least this person takes the time to find homes for her fickle mind. Lots of others do even worse things to animals.

Unfortunately many people like dogs and cats while they are cute little babies and when they get out of the cute baby stage they want to get rid of them and start again.  I am not surprise that she is someplace like Craigs list.  Most shelters and rescues catch on to this game pretty quickly and quit allowing people to adopt from them.  In some places shelters and the larger rescues share lists so people doing this get cut off from adoption pretty quickly.

I never thought of the bright side of this story, but was also angered like @SarahD1987  , that some people treat their animals as objects and not living and breathing beings.

You, @Fhi09   made me realize that it could be worse.

@SarahD1987.   I would love there to be a universal law that says that every animal owner needs to have a permit to own an animal,  and that animals needs to be spayed or neutered if you aren't a registered breeder.

The cost of the permits can be free, or donations to animal shelters, but if owners were registered, and monitored, I wonder if careless ownership would be avoided.

But in saying this, I do know that it would never work, because so many cats and dogs are out there, and many could never be monitored.

I just thought that through a permit system, more education would reach people on how to better take care of their pets.

Also, does that dumb lady in question, seriously think that a dog, is less work or time commitment than a cat??  wow.....people are strange., or the logic is beyond me.

So true. So many of the "reasons for surrendering" in the Animal Intake form is just downright facepalm-worthy.

"I didn't know it would grow so big."

Really?? How small did you think a Doberman puppy is going to be when it grows up??

I looked at GumTree when I was looking for another cat (before I found Mouse), and I found it really upsetting too.  Then I found I was reading people's stories about why the cat or kitten was looking for a new home and not believing them because they were so repetitive.  Too much money being asked for, and sad sad stories about little kittens that had just been adopted and then either someone was terribly allergic or another pet wasn't accepting it.  Which ever way I looked at it the little creature that was being put up for sale was being used in a horrible way and I didn't feel my getting involved would make the over all situation better.  I won't get in to all the possible scenarios about why I felt I wouldn't be helping as I'd probably end up breaking site rules, but it led me to do something I had never thought I would and took the route of going to pedigree cat breeders.  It is important to know background here as in the UK rescue cats are almost exclusively reserved for homes that offer outdoor access safe gardens and I can not do this  (I had 2 RB cats who lived well in to pensioner years and wanted a young cat again so the odd older cat that might have been offered was not what I was looking to take on).

I had seen here before that the U.K. rescues require that cats have access to a safe outdoor area.  I think the idea of indoor only kitties is more accepted here in the U.S. than it is in Europe.  Of course I think the best situation would be an outdoor area with some type of cat safe fencing or a large enclosed patio but for those of us who live in apartments that isn't possible.

It's sad that there are people out there that would do this :( I am concerned that there are so many people getting pets that are advertised on Gumtree but don't have the intention of keeping them Forever!! We need to re-home our little ones and am so anxious about it. I really hope I find nice people that will let us visit or see photos. Very sad about it all
