I am SO mad at my grandmother right now.. I caught her feeding my cat, Skinner, a really sugary carrot muffin and a cup of coffee.. yes, COFFEE! I grabbed Skinner before he could finish either of them, but he'd eaten a chunk of the muffin and was lapping at the coffee when I saw him. She had also loaded the coffee with sugar and heavy cream.

I'm really upset about this, as I never, EVER give any kind of "people food" to any of my pets. They are all on natural, organic, grain-free diets.

It's been a couple hours since this happened and so far Skinner isn't showing any signs of ill health (I think I caught him before he ingested too much of either item) but I just wanted to make sure if there was any potential symptoms I should be looking out for. I know coffee especially is terrible for both cats and dogs, as is dairy products and sugary foods.

I'm definitely going to keep a closer eye on Skinner whenever my grandmother's around, I really don't want this to happen again! She has a terrible habit of treating animals like people :(

Calm down and take a deep breath. It was a bad thing to happen but from what you describe it is highly unlikely that there will be any further effects. Lots of cats ingest things they shouldn't - I have panicked in the past about them getting hold of white chocolate and also drinking tea or coffee, but occasionally in these small amounts there will no harm done. Some cats have quite a sweet tooth! These particular things in very small doses are not toxic to emergency levels. You must of course make sure that your grandmother does not do this again. Can you not explain to her that these things are bad for cats?

Caffeine would have the greatest potential for serious problems but since it has been a couple of hours I think he will be okay.  He may have diarrhea though particularly because of the cream.

Thanks, and yes I figured that he'd likely be alright because he didn't ingest all of it, but still... I work so hard to keep my pets fit and healthy and then somebody does something as ridiculous as this. I just hoped that "sudden" ingestion of all that sugar/cream wouldn't hurt him since he's never had any of that stuff before, at all. But I think he's a pretty tough kitty!

And I tried (and tried and tried) to explain to my grandmother in many ways why she shouldn't have done that, but she's just so...clueless! She kept telling me "Aw, but he wanted it, he was hungry, he was asking me for it, he's so cute I couldn't resist, etc.." She is just one of those people who's impossible to reason with, unfortunately..So I think the best I can do is just keep the cat away from her next time!

Yes, sometimes our Elders do.  She may not be all present with us in her mind.  She may be remembering how she treated a favorite dog years ago.  So you are correct that she needs to be watched, more for her sake than your kitty.
