Its that time for her shot, last year when i took her they gave her a shot in between her shoulders and she devolped a huge lump, now even there is a tiny bump, should i request them to give her the shot somewhere else or the same spot, she never had reactions to shots before except last time. If i say on the leg will it be likely a problem with a lump/walking occur??

Request the modified live virus vaccine. It should always be given on the right front leg, between the elbow and lower shoulder.

The modified live vax has only very rare chance of a sarcoma at the injection site.

When injected where I stated, in case of future sarcoma, it will mean amputation over euthanization.

Also, once a cat has been fully vaccinated as a kitten, then at 1 year, it is not necessary as once believed to re-vaccinate yearly.

Once every 3 years for indoor/outdoor cat, and every 4 years or more for an indoor only cat.

Good grief !

Between the shoulders is prehistoric !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd say (in this order):
  • find a competent feline veterinarian
  • never, ever use adjuvanted vaccines
  • ask that the vaccines be injected in the TAIL of the cat    (see this: Vet to Vet: Tail Vaccination in Cats)
  • get yourself up-to-speed on vaccinations, starting here: http://www.catinfo.org/?link=vaccines
  • continue that with hearing the latest thinking and research on long term immunity from just one full set of initial vaccinations....if you're sincerely interested in this, post back and I'll dig out the references I have for the topic

No, certainly not every year. Current AAHA/AVMA recommendation is once every 3 years for FVCRP, and has been for several years now (since 2006). If your vet is still doing yearly vaccines, he/she is either hopelessly out of date or is milking you for the money :/. It is your cat and you can make the decisions, but if your vet argues I'm sure you can Google "AAHA feline vaccine recommendations" and print that off to support your position.

BUT, there is decent evidence that one FVCRP vaccine given after 6 months of age confers lifetime immunity. So if you're comfortable not giving the vaccine at all that would almost certainly be safe. Up to you.

Indoor cats do not need the Feline Leukemia vaccine unless they live with a cat who has FeLV.

Rabies vaccine should be given in accordance with local laws, but ask for PureVax because it's less likely to cause sarcomas.

Yes! I meant to mention that some vets want to give felv vaccines, don't do it!!

Only when there is another resident who is felv positive, and only then.

They have a higher rate of sarcoma occurence.

Except for some areas/countries, even rabies are no longer a requirement.

Rabies was removed as a "core" vaccine in the recommendations. But in most places in the US, rabies vaccines are still required by law. I wouldn't advise anyone to go against the local laws.

wow thx for the info guys,my vet is kind of expensive on everything. she has had prob 5 fvcrp as she is 7 years old,so from what i understand she wont need anymore the rest of her life????? If thats the case they recommend a fecal exam and a yearly exam or should i avoid that too???

A yearly checkup is a good idea. Especially as she gets older, catching possible health problems early is important. A fecal exam is probably not necessary (has one ever come up showing worms?), but doesn't hurt anything.

Racn1320:

FVCRP - note the date, add  3 years.

Rabies - note the date, find out your local by-laws and find out how long your Rabies shot is good for.  Some are good for 3 years, others 1 year.

This is what helps me.  Make a computer file, or use your smartphone etc.  Mark down all the shots / dates etc.  That way you know when to take your cat in.

The only NON-adjuvanted RABIES vaccine carries an official 1-year guarantee of immunity from the manufacturer.....so, because it's non-adjuvanted, it will be far less risky to use this yearly than to use a 3-year adjuvanted product.

And, once again, if you choose to reduce the sarcoma risk even further (who wouldn't ? ).....vaccinate in the TAIL !

They are, apparently, seeking to get 3-year approval for Purevax rabies. It hasn't happened yet but maybe soon! Hopefully.

Purevax also makes FVRCP and FeLV vaccines. I'm pretty sure all the other brands are adjuvanted.

went to vet today, everything looks good, she even lost 3 pounds, prob b/c she has been more active,we agreed on 3 year fvcrp and she said that is non ADJUVANTED ,the rabies she does is ADJUVANTED ,said to prob give her shot in rear leg. I asked about non ADJUVANTED rabies she said they dont have it,she has to buy a tray of 25 to get that. what do you all think. When she is do should i shop around for non ADJUVANTED

My kitties don't get the FVCRP vaccine.  They pretty much don't get any vaccines once they've had their kitten shots.  If your kitty isn't exposed to other cats, stays indoors, and you don't travel with your kitty, there's no need for the vaccine.
