My three year old cat, Jenny has had a liquidy brown discharge coming from the skin on her behind area. My Vet has given her steroids, antibiotics and topical ointments to no avail.   With a second opinion, the Vet declared that Jenny had skin fold dermatitis and would need surgery to remove the folds. I really don't see any folds and my Vet agreed. A third opinion suggested that it could be a food allergy.  Jenny now eats Royal Canin canned food but with 5 other cats, it's not 100% that that's all she's eating. She's also been on Prednisolone for an extended period.  Just this week, she has started Atopica. I'm really hoping that this helps.  Has anyone else had a cat with a behind discharge???

Thanks for responding!  Definitely not diarrhea and not glands.  It's coming from her skin around the entire behind area.  She leaks when she sits/lies and is slightly bothered by it. The Vet thought that the Pred would help. It did not.  This is been going on for approximately one year now.  I have never read anything about this type of symptom coming from a food allergy but one of the vets thinks that's what it is. Not a life threatening situation but yet very disturbing.

That is different.  I know kitties can have some seemingly unrelated issues that are food allergies but I hadn't heard of this.  I was wondering, given the location, if it's something to do with the litter.  I have heard of kitties having itchiness and hair loss on their behinds, lower legs and stomach that is related to a litter allergy.

Hi - It could be the litter.  I'm really hoping that the Atopica helps if it is an allergy  - no matter what she may be allergic to.  The Vet is also suggesting taking a tiny biopsy of the area which would require anesthesia and a stitch.  I may wait until she finishes the Atopica and see what happens.

Thanks!!!!!

I have been experiencing the brown discharge as well.  I have a 5 year old Persian/domestic mix.  She has been diagnosed with facial dermatitis and allergies.  Currently taking the 25mg capsule of Atopica daily as well as prednisolone.  It is a rollercoaster ride and her facial dermatitis issues have certainly improved.  She also licked all the hair off her belly and upper limbs.  The Atopica seems to have promoted hair growth and there is a velvety layer of fur now present on her belly.  The main issue now is the defecation and urination around her food area.  She will use the litterbox on occasion but mostly outside of it.  She is an indoor cat and luckily has my undivided attention.  I am told this is a lifelong condition and that her life will not be a long one so I want to help keep her as comfortable as possible.  I have always had a cat and this is the first one I experience with such issues.  It is comforting to read posts with similar issues.  Lets hope together we can figure this out.

I'm using atopica for a completely different reason. Ear, face, eye allergies to everything and anything green. Canin is supposed to be good, but it has a ton of crap in it. Go with raw. It makes a huge difference. At first I thought it was food allergies, but it's not..in either case..once I switched to raw food; no more stinky loose bowels...still dealing with asthma and all the other stuff.  Atopica is an immune suppressant...if it's not an allergy, and it doesnt seem to hurt..you might be looking at a yeast infection or fungal infection in which case; the prednisone will make it worse.  Good luck.

please be careful of atopica and your pets. atopica caused jaundis and liver failure to my 5 year old cat olly because it lost weight too fast on this medication. this caused us to have to try surgery to add a feeding tube that would run out the back of my cat's head. my cat passed away monday morning and did not survive the surgery. i am looking for others that this may have happened to and hopefully warning others who may have pets on this dangerous drug.

First ,,, so sorry for  your loss of your precious pet.  My cat has been on Atopica or about  20 days & now is vomiting & having diarrhea with bloody mucus also.  It seemed to be fine, then BOOM, he is really sick from it ... :(  I am not trying to scare anyone else from trying it, but just warn people to watch their babies closely, as this drug can have SUDDEN repercussions!! :(
