What are your thoughts about it in pets foods? I didnt know til recently it was frowned upon. I first read it was just needed in fish flavored foods. But looked at the chicken and turkey Shebas and it contains it too. So i e-mailed them. This was there response. What do you think?

Rumors circulating on the internet about menadione causing various diseases such as cancer in pets have caused some confusion and concern about the ingredient. Here are the facts:

• Menadione sodium bisulfite complex is approved by the FDA as a pet food ingredient based on its safety and efficacy to deliver Vitamin K to pets.

• Menadione has not been linked to causing cancer. In fact, there are experimental treatments using menadione to treat specific forms of cancer in humans.

I've heard it's bad I don't know what to think. It's in the fancy feast classic that I feed to my cats on a regular basis, but I also feed hound and gatos regularly which doesn't have menadione. My family and I are not in a position to commit to raw feeding but I hope that I do right by my cats, it's so hard to pick out appropriate foods that don't contain any bad ingredients.  The main ingredient I stay away from is careegean (not sure how to  spell it) and the only concern I have about hound and gatos is that it has three different types of thickeners which I've also heard can be bad for cats.

On the whole a good rotation of grain free foods can cut down on any one supposed bad ingredient.

I have read a couple of reports about the synthetic version of Vit K being used and how this substance is bad for cats. In small quantities it might not be harmful over the short term, but then like anything else, you have to consider that small quantities can become cumulative in the system over time. There doesn't seem to be enough information to determine the amount being used and the potential for long-term effects. I guess for me, I would question why some pet foods companies such as Purina, feel the need to use a synthetic version of Vit K at all when you don't see this ingredient in many of the premium brands? What you do see in some premium brands are things like Kale, Spinach, Broccoli which could be there as sources of natural Vit K2.
