Fat Cat Not Eating Enough?

So, I would just like to start of by saying, I am 16 years old, but mature for my age. We have a fat cat, so fat she is unable to clean her backside, so we have to clean it for her. However, because this is added work and everyone in my family would rather not deal with it, im very unsure what to do! They would rather just euthanize her than to deal with it, and I think that's just wrong because, there's really nothing wrong her her other than being overweight.

So, I started her on wet food about 2 days ago, and i'm very unsure of myself with it. When I put it down, she seems excited but she eats very, very little! I'm worried after reading Mikey's, Bennies and Molly's journey that she might loose weight too fast causing more problems. My mom said she might not like the food, but she seems like she's enjoying it. So, i'm really worried she's not eating enough, but is it possible she just really needs that low amount of calories because she barely moves?

I just want the best for my cat. I definitely do not want to see her be put down for a silly reason like that, but I am a student and find it very difficult to monitor her along with all my other work. So, Im just curious to see what you think-once I get her down to a proper weight, should I put her up for adoption? Mainly because once she gets down to a proper weight, would it not still be a hassle to maintain her weight, or would it?

Im mainly just looking for guidance here, someone thats on my side. Thanks a ton, any opinion/tip is extremely appreciated!

I don't know anything about a weight loss program for cats, but there are plenty of forum members who do. I'm sure one will be along before too long and be able to respond. Good luck with the weight loss program.

Good for you for trying to do the right thing for your cat! I can't imagine euthanizing a cat for being too fat which isn't her fault in the first place.

How much does your cat weigh? How old is she? Which canned food are you feeding now? And how much of it daily? If you read Dr. Pierson's website and you are aware of the danger of fatty liver disease from losing weight too quickly, then you are on the right path. Her website says that 1-2% weight loss per week is a safe weight loss goal. 15 calories per pound of ideal body weight is generally a good starting point, but depending on how much your cat weights and how inactive she is, it may be less.

Here's a really good inspirational thread about another cat who lost weight and is so much the healthier and happier for it.  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/245236/mickey-my-27-lbs-foster-and-his-journey-back-to-a-healthy-weight

How much does your cat weigh?

She currently weights 15.8 pounds, though it may not seem like a lot she has a very small bone structure.

How old is she?

She is 4 years old.

Which canned food are you feeding now?

Nutrience, the chicken kind. My mother, not wanting to deal with it, and me, without a job lead to this. I had found a very good high protein, no grains, natural meat ingredients, by a local brand, but she didnt want to spend 50 cents more. So, I know its not the best, but its better than the dry we were feeding her before.

And how much of it daily?

At first, I though between 5-7oz per day would be a good starting point, but it seemed like way too much because she never finished it. I then brought it down to 4, but she still never finished. I'm getting worried she's not eating enough. Although, she never bothers me for food unless its around her feeding time.

Sorry, a couple more questions. Do you know how much your cat should weigh? And do you know how many calories is in a can of the Nutrience?

If she was used to free feeding dry before, then it is best to feed her small, very frequent meals. She is not used to eating larger meals which is one reason why she isn't eating nearly as much. I don't think 4 oz of food a day is enough for her. I would shoot for 5 oz, but it really depends on the calorie count of the food.

Unfortunately, I do not know hot much she should weigh, as well as the Nutrience canned food does not list the calorie count, nor does the website.

Try a different cat food, in a fish flavor. I think two 3oz cans would be alright. I wish you luck with your cat and you are doing a great thing. Also try when you get time, to see if she might play a little bit.

Figure out how much your cat should weigh first. Then figure out what 10% of her current weight is (1.58 lb.) Subtract 1.58 lb. From 15.8 which is 14.72 lb. So then start feeding her as if she was 14.5 lb. (Just to round it off). Then once she reaches that weight, calculate 10% of that weight and feed for the new weight. You are right in not wanting her to lose too fast. 1 lb. Per month is good. I would not feed fish to any cat as it is not natural for them to do so, contrary to what tv ads may tell you. They eat anything that walks or flies. Not swims! You can feed her what she is eating now just feed her for the weight as I described. Feed in meals not free feed and make sure no one feeds her treats. If they do, decrease her meal amount accordingly. You can also put each or a bit of her kibble on each step on a flight of stairs so she has to move. Also playing with her with a laser pointer or get her chasing a feather or mouse toy will get her burning calories. The ideal would be to feed her canned food but I am guessing that, at 16 years old that would not be feasible and it doesn't sound like your parents would spend much on your kitty. Congratulations on trying to get your kitty healthy! And maybe, when your mom is on a good mood, you can take her into the vet for a checkup.
