Hello. I am new to the forum and this is my first post and hopefully you can help.
My 8 year siamese female was just diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis. After four days at the vet and emergency het diabetes is under control but will require insulin shots. Her ketones levels finally went down to negative. Brought her home today but she refuses to eat. Is it normal? Considering she is on insulin shots we fed her via syringe but will she eat on her own? Is there an adjustment period? Thank you!

I am sorry to hear this. It is unfortunately common that cats who don't feel well won't eat which can lead to other secondary problems. How was she fed while at the vet's? By syringe as well? I am sure there will be an adjustment period. You do need to continue to syringe feed her enough calories (about one 5.5 oz can a day) until she does start eating on her own again. She may need an appetite stimulant to get her eating again which you should discuss with your vet. Did the vet give you guidelines on care? Ketoacidosis very serious and she will need time and care to recover.

In the meanwhile, here's some reading for you. While there is no cure for diabetes, there are ways to manage it. With a proper low carb diet, it may be possible to reduce or even eliminate her need for insulin in the future.
