Hello all, I am completely desolate. My beautiful blue persian's jaw has dislocated a few times over the past year, every 5 months or so. It happened again last thursday, the vet fixed it, then it happened 4 times in the space of about 3 hours last night. We took him back and forth to the emergency vets to get it reset, and this morning took him to his normal vet to get some x-rays and some teeth removed.

This is breaking my heart, he cannot eat, drink or sleep when this happens, we could cope if it was every few months, but every few hours is too much for him to take. He is 12 years old and perfectly healthy and happy in every other respect, it would seem such an injustice if we had to have him put down because of this when he could have several more wonderful years was this not going on.

The x-rays show he has a loose jaw, and orthopaedic surgery has too much risk. He is currently sound asleep, after no sleep all of last night and surgery on his teeth today, the vets also had to put him on IV fluids because he hadn't been able to drink anything in so long. At the moment we are hopeful that having his teeth take out will make it more manageable, but if not, I do not know where to draw the line. I am sure you will understand what I mean when I say this cat is my soulmate, I cannot bear to lose him, I am at a complete loss right now.

Try to believe your boy will come through this surgery and he will have the strength to let you know what he wants, how he feels.

If this dental surgery has achieved some stability for his jaw perhaps he will be comfortable and happy again and your heartache can settle as he regains strength.  If not, I do believe our cats are able to tell us when they feel they have to leave us, in body if not in soul.

You are surrounded by others here who have gone through this type of decision with their soul mates and we will be right here if you need us.

What is your soul mate's name?  I will keep thoughts of him close to my heart tonight and continue to send positive vibes for you both.

Do you know what caused the problem with his jaw to start with or is it just one of those things that developed and as it happened more the joints got more loose?

I'll pray for everything to come out all right, there are miracles you know! Please kiss your baby for me and tell him how much you love him. He's shared your loved for 12 wonderful years and is forever in your heart, you'll know what to do, he'll let you know. Please know we will all send healing vibes your way, keep your chin up, and pray for the best!

His name is Bubbles, we named him so because as a kitten he would always jump on the table next to the bath and play with the bubbles :)

to update you, today is the second day since he had his teeth out, so far his jaw has stayed in place, but it is still early days. We are mashing his food up in the processor and probably will for a few weeks. All in all I am feeling hopeful, I am so proud of him for making it this far, and we are just taking every day as it comes. I agree with you all that cats let you know when it is their time.

Thank you guys so much for your words of support, it means the world.

The vet said he just has an extremely loose jaw which is slightly misaligned, most likely due to his persian breeding, his features arent terribly extreme but his face is completely flat.

Hugs for Bubbles.  I have my fingers crossed and sending lots of vibes for his making a good recovery from this surgery and that jaw staying in place so he can get back to being a happy, comfortable Persian able to spends lots of cuddly time with you.
