I am so happy she tested negative for leukemia and aids.  It sounds like she may be like the declawed starving cat I rescued, and although he never got chunky, he did stop being a feline skeleton after about a month because he ate well and we fed him the best food as well as freshly cooked chicken with lots of natural chicken fat.  We never knew how old he was (all the vet could say was "over 10 years old") so for all we know, he could have been 18 -- and he had two good years after that.  Each day you give her is a blessing.

You are doing everything possible for her.  Thank you so much for your caring spirit.  She knows she is loved.  I am hoping the best for Pixie.  You are both in my thoughts.

The fact is, as bad as her ear cancer had become, she was still able to be saved.

I have since seen several ferals who are white or very light colored with early ear cancer. It stings them, feels like they are burning. Goes from mild to extreme in time.

Pixie may very well have early ear cancer,. it sounds like it if she has scabby tips. She will need this area removed. However, until you are able to find help financially for this surgery to be done, it doesn't do much good just knowing about it. Also, in early cancer, it may not be detected with testing, and will need to get a bit worse to know cancer or not cancer.

Absolutely keep her inside only. As soon as the sun hits her ears they will progress much faster than inside only.

And she needs to be fattened up and made healthier before she could be under anesthesia to remove them anyway.

So personally, I would now focus on her weight and getting some meat on her bones. Then take it from there.

You're doing a great job!!!

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and Pixie. It may very well just be that she's malnourished and anemic from the fleas. My feral, Mia, had a bad reaction to the anesthesia during her spay surgery last summer after I trapped her, causing kidney and liver  damage. She got an infection and stopped eating. Also, she was anemic from fleas and malnourished. I also learned that she had been shot a few months prior, and her leg had been broken. Although it had healed, it healed crooked, so she walks with a gait and has problems jumping. The bullet remains lodged in her pelvis. I gave her TLC like you did, and within a month she was playing and happy, and her kidneys and liver were back to normal and now, 6 months later, she's positively plump and spoiled! Cats are very resilient creatures. While Mia was near death, even though she barely knew me, I made eye contact and told her over and over again that I really wanted her to live and promised her a happy, spoiled life if she would fight to stay alive. I believe she understood me. She is my sweet little kitty now, and I pray the same will be true for Pixie!

I'm very glad to hear that Pixie tested negative for both of those diseases. Poor little thing, I wonder how long she was out on the streets before you found her? Did the vet give you anything to treat her fleas with? It's good that she's eating again. Plenty of food and lots of TLC is what she needs right now. And I hope the problem with her ears isn't too serious.

Thank you so much for helping her. I wish there were more people like you in the world.

Josie, did the vet suggest that the ears might be infected or prescribe the antibiotic for them? Keep us posted.

Yes....however I must say, she is very likely correct. A light colored cat with ears that appear this way, well pretty commonly seen by vets, she has likely seen her share of cases.

Ear cancer has specific characteristics, and by the photos you added, I would sadly guess she does have it.

Ear cancer is caused on the ears and/or nose from extended exposure to the sun, mainly in white/cream colored cats as they are lacking the protective pigmentation that colored cats have.

According to pet MD site surgery can save a cat with ear cancer. Let us know what the vet says. I would like to try to help if I can.

Aw Josie....... be still my heart...... how you took Pixie home the way you did and are doing the best you can for her. SHE KNOWS THIS TOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look at her in the picture above. She knows she is loved, safe and being cared for. Please know that it is extremely hard to age a kitty so if they think she is around 10, she could really be much older too. Do what you can within your means, hun, and know that what ever happens and however this turns out or end's up that you did RIGHT :high5: by this kitty. There is no greater gift to a stray practically on death's door than to have a person pick them up and give them the peace and love they deserve for the time they have left - whatever that may be. I am NOT being negative about Pixie's situation, just want you to know that it is alright :alright:, no matter what happens, Pixie couldn't be more happy at this moment. THANK YOU for you deep compassion. You made my day with your beautiful rescue story.

And, yes, SHE IS A BEAUTY !!!!!!!!!! And, you are her miracle. :heart3: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: Pixie :rub:

It certainly is!!

This is why I posted Destiny's picture, so you can see that, even as horrible as her ears were, I mean BAD, ugly, black, crispy dried, curling tips, split, scabby and bloody, which is about as bad as they can get, she is doing great still after 5 years.

It's hard to really see Pixie's ears clearly, but would bet she does have cancer on her ears, it's just not as far advanced.

If you think about it, what other reason would there be for her ears to look the way they do.

Ear mites are inside her ears, and will cause the insides to get dirty looking, and sometimes like she has an ear infection inside, swelling, etc.

If she scratches at them, this will show at the base of her ears, not the tips like she has.

But I believe she simply has ear mites, no infection, and early ear cancer.

This is all due to her being chucked outside........

My suggestions are, of course get the mites treated, and spend some time getting her weight up and stable. During this time, find a vet who works with shelters/rescue groups, who will amputate her ears for little cost.

The vet who works with my rescue charges about $80.00 to amputate. Regular vets will charge several times this amt.

You might be suprised and, going through that lady who helped you with her before, she may be able to direct you to a vet who will help with getting her ears done.

She is in no condition at this point however to undergo anesthesia, and when she is stronger and healthier and more ready, be sure to add in her getting speyed. This is important at her age.

How's she doing? I have to agree after seeing the pictures that it's cancer. Now this type of skin cancer humans can get. It's very treatable. Again remember you are doing your best. Someone put up a post on what to do if you need help. I pray it comes her way. Right now you've made her life so much better. She knows you love her.
