Do the "PH Balanced" wet foods really help with preventing crystals?

Our vet recommended that we switch out overweight male cat to a PH balanced wet food, she informed us that it is supposed to help prevent crystals in their urine which can cause a lot of problems.

What is your guys opinion on this? Do you feed your kitties the special wet food?

I found Friskies brand for the same price, and it claims to be a PH balanced wet food (turkey and gravy classic pattee special diet). Would this be a good alternative? Do I need to go 100% wet food or can I do a mix of dry and wet?

Thanks!

When it comes to crystals pretty much any wet food will be better for him. I feed mine beef n' chicken (?) special diet twice daily and Innova/Triumph in the a.m. To help with the crystals many of us like to put a little extra water in with the wet food so that it keeps everything moving. If it's in the budget consider going to an all wet diet. A low phosphorus and magnesium levels is what you'll have to focus on the most when choosing a new food.

As for the diet i'm not sure. What are you feeding him now?

A good chart and article.

We feed him the 1/2c Purina Healthy Weight dry cat food currently in the morning, and then at night he gets half a can of the special diet food at night.
