My cats wouldn't dare to sit on top of the fridge. Not even on the counter. Besides, there is too much stuff on top of the fridge for any cat to even find a place to sit. HOWEVER: some 7 years ago when I lived someplace

else one of my cats whom I still have would take a jump from this place to the top of the fridge until I put too much stuff up there for her to make the jump. I never got a pic of her up there so you must take my word for it that she did. After I moved she never even climbed a counter although sometimes I find her spread out on the dining table where she is not supposed to be either..

I was pretty happy when the kitty discovered the top of the fridge. It's been a real challenge trying to keep him happy in the house, so the more high places in the house that he can jump on, the better. He loves climbing to the top shelf of my walk in closet also.

I have plenty of places for my cats to climb up on (scratching posts with platforms, cat tree, window sills) I just don't want them on places where I eat or prepare food for myself or others. Anything that is not THEIR furniture and is over waist high is off limits so that includes the fridge and the tops of bookcases, but they are welcome to sit on the sofa and chairs and of course sleep on my bed whether I am in it or not.   on the back of the sofa

on top of the cat tree

asleep in the tunnel of the cat tree

  the back of the sofa

  on a chair

these are all pics of Sascha, a Russian Blue look-alike, who passed 4 years ago. I still miss him. Now I don't have a grey cat but a silver Persian who will pass as grey.

@segelkatt    I adore this picture of Sascha on top of the cat tree - what a wondefully relaxed and super fit looking cat. View media item 311753
I have no idea how you manage to keep your cats off the kitchen surfaces - I've never succeded, but it might be to do with there not being anyone at home a lot of the time so any cats I have get a pretty free run of the place.  I also kind of take the view that they are in door only and I want them to be happy and explore as much as they can (I use boards rather than work top for any food prep').

@stewball, your snuggles with that big blue girl look wonderful.  You must have had a lovely long cuddle with her.
Hoping your boys weren't jealous of any strange cat smells on your clothes when you got back from that holiday.

All but one of my cats have come to me when they were already several years old, the exception being the one who jumped on the fridge (Capucchino) whom I got when she was ca. 7 mos old and who is now 15 years old.

Whenever I see a new cat jumping or climbing on things where they are not supposed to be I say very firmly "no" and push them off. If I catch them again I take a loosely rolled up newspaper and slap the counter or whatever right in front of the culprit and again say "no, bad cat". The newspaper makes an awful racket and cat doesn't like that. I do that consistently and after a while cat will stop going on the counter or wherever. Lest you think I or anyone else has always been home to do that, well, I retired 8 years ago and the naughty cat has been here a lot longer. Sascha, Ralphie, Mungojerry, Oliver, and whatever else all the different cats' names were, all learned not to jump on counters etc and they were all very loving and affectionate cats who couldn't wait for me to come home from work. They all had the run of the place and I did not always have a fancy patio like I have now, sometimes not even a tiny balcony, window sills with bird feeders outside and trees with birds in them, squirrels on the trees and lawn for them to look at, and an aquarium that was covered to keep the cats out,  plenty of scratching posts with  platforms and at one time I had 2  (THREE)  cat trees. These cats had a great life although they never got to go outside. They had plenty of things to do and places to go without jumping or sitting on the counters. And yes, I use cutting  boards too, but I don't like cat feet on the counter anyway.

@segelkatt    I must lack authority with my cat then.

   Doesn't surprise me really.
I guess if it really bothered me I would be firmer with them.

Sounds to me like your cats have a pretty awesome set up, and given how wonderful they always look in your photos how could you resist.

Thank you. I also reared children by myself and they have all turned out alright. So I guess I had practice with children before I had a cat family

That must be the secret. I've had no luck keeping my cats off the top of the fridge, they kept climbing up there and knocking everything over so I gave in and put a rug up there for them. I know when I'm beat.

:lol3:

It's now one of Forest's favourite hangouts.

So cute! I was thinking about putting Tiger's bed on top of the fridge. The top of the fridge really serves no other purpose other than to collect junk so may as well use it for a cat hang out.

Bugsy found me 6 years ago on my front stoop coming home from work one cold winter evening. No one came forward to claim him. He was about a year old and wasn't micro chipped or fixed. I almost gave him away because I didn't want to take on a 3rd cat in my apartment. I'm so glad I was able to keep him! Love this guy!
